Experimental Survey on Microwave Drying of Porous Media
Authors
Abstract:
The cost of drying carpet which is done toward the end of the manufacturing process, is quite high. The carpet industry has been using convection drying for many years. Little attention has been given to quantifying the effect of microwave power during the drying of carpet. An experimental system was developed whereby air was introduced into the cavity of a domestic microwave oven. The results indicated that microwave power levels and sample specifications are the most important parameters, with statistically significant effects on the drying constants.

full textDrying in porous media with gravity-stabilized fronts: experimental results.
In a recent paper [Yiotis et al., Phys. Rev. E 85, 046308 (2012)] we developed a model for the drying of porous media in the presence of gravity. It incorporated effects of corner film flow, internal and external mass transfer, and the effect of gravity. Analytical results were derived when gravity opposes drying and hence leads to a stable percolation drying front. In this paper, we test the t...
full textDynamics of drying in 3D porous media.
The drying dynamics in three dimensional porous media are studied with confocal microscopy. We observe abrupt air invasions in size from single particle to hundreds of particles. We show that these result from the strong flow from menisci in large pores to menisci in small pores during drying. This flow causes air invasions to start in large menisci and subsequently spread throughout the entire...
full textA Dual-Scale Modeling Approach for Drying Hygroscopic Porous Media
A new dual–scale modelling approach is presented for simulating the drying of a wet hygroscopic porous material that couples the porous medium (macroscale) with the underlying pore structure (microscale). The proposed model is applied to the convective drying of wood at low temperatures and is valid in the so–called hygroscopic range, where hygroscopically held liquid water is present in the so...
full textAn experimental study on hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flow in coarse-grained porous media
The equations of fluids in porous media are very useful in designing the rockfill and diversion dams, gabions, breakwaters and ground water reserves. Researches have been showed that the Forchheimer equation is not sufficient for the analysis of hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flows; because, in these flows, in addition to the hydraulic gradient and velocity, the variable of radius is...
full textExperimental Investigation of the Permeability and Inertial Effect on Fluid Flow through Homogeneous Porous Media
The value of the permeability in fluid flow through porous media is important for process investigation. In low Reynolds number, the classic Darcy’s law is suitable for simulation of fluid flow. In this paper, an experimental study for evaluation of preformed fiber permeability has been done. Also, the deviations from the classical Darcy law by experimental and numerical simulation of the N...
