Abstract:

This paper presents the results of investigation carried out to improve the mechanical toughness of cement mortar. Toughness is a basic parameter which has to be improved in brick walls, concrete roads, machine foundations, dams etc. Materials fails due to an impact force and vibrations resulting in minor cracks and bonding failure between bricks, it leads to failure of the structure. In order to avoid the failure toughness has to be enhanced and this can be done by modifying the cement mortar. In this project recycled glass is used in the form of powder less than 45 µm as replacement of cement. Also natural rubber latex is added as 20% replacement of water. Three mortar mix are considered, namely 1:3, 1:4, 1:5. The compressive strength of mortar cubes, and flexural strength are done to determine the strength and toughness of the mortar. Results showed that fracture toughness increased to considerable amount.

Increasing flexural strength and toughness of cement mortar using multi-walled Carbon nanotubes

In this study the effect of using multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on flexural and compressive strengths, ultimate displacement and energy absorption capability of standard cement mortar considering different weight percentages of nanotubes as well as different dispersion methods has been investigated. Influential point in adding nanotubes to the composites is their proper dispersion, which...

Experimental Investigation of Multi-mode Fiber Laser Cutting of Cement Mortar

This study successfully applied multi-mode laser cutting with the variation of the laser cutting speed to cement mortar for the first time. The effects of the amount of silica sand in the cement mortar on laser cutting are tested and analyzed. The kerf width and penetration depth of the specimens after laser cutting are investigated. As the laser cutting speed increases, the penetration depth d...

Experimental Investigation on the Effect of Ultrasonication on Dispersion and Mechanical Performance of Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube-Cement Mortar Composites

Due to their remarkable mechanical properties, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are considered by many researchers to be a highly promising filler and reinforcement agent for enhanced performance cementitious materials. Currently, however, achieving an effective dispersion of MWCNTs remains a major challenge in developing high performance nano-cementitious composites, since carbon nanotubes ...

Effects of number of freeze-thaw cycles and freezing temperature on mode I and mode II fracture toughness of cement mortar

Natural and artificial materials including rocks and cement-based materials such as concrete and cement mortar are affected both physically and chemically by various natural factors known as weathering factors. The freeze-thaw process, as a weathering factor, considerably affects the properties of rocks and concrete. Therefore, the effect of the freeze-thaw process on the physical and mechanica...
