Abstract:

After advent of Islam especially through and after the reign of Abbasid caliphs; interest of scientists and engineers wasdrawn towards the” mechanical or ingenious devices”. The wise jar was originally designed by Ahmad ibnMüsä, thefamous Iranian scientist who lived in the 5th century A.H.(9th A.D). It consists of a jar with a mechanically intelligentmechanism inside, which is capable of separating two liquids on the bases of their densities. This jar was constructedand tested as a part of an experimental archaeology research project at the Iranian Research Organization for Science &Technology (IROST). The jar was designed in detail, and was manufactured and tested according to a book entitled Al-Hiyal; written by Ahmad ibn Müsä. However, to establish the correct operation of the jar, minor modifications were madeto its original design set up and it was tested, and as a result the jar operated as expected by the book.

The Archaeology of Ancient Civilizations

Early state societies (civilizations) developed in areas of the world where intensive agricultural systems could be developed to produce food on the scale necessary to support relatively large and dense populations. The centralized structure of these states contributed to the process of intensification and agricultural investment, though in most cases direct state involvement appears not to hav...

a paradigm shift away from method-wise teaching to strategy-wise teaching: an investigation of reconstructive strategy versus communicative strategy

Archaeology. Mystery towers in Peru are an ancient solar calendar.

Since the 19th century, archaeologists have puzzled over Chankillo, a massive, 2300year-old ruin 400 kilometers north of Lima, with a walled hilltop center and an enigmatic line of 13 small, rectilinear towers. Scientists have variously interpreted the complex “as a fort, a redoubt, a temple, and even as the setting for ceremonial battles,” says archaeologist Iván Ghezzi of the Pontificia Unive...

Network Archaeology: Uncovering Ancient Networks from Present-Day Interactions

What proteins interacted in a long-extinct ancestor of yeast? How have different members of a protein complex assembled together over time? Our ability to answer such questions has been limited by the unavailability of ancestral protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. To overcome this limitation, we propose several novel algorithms to reconstruct the growth history of a present-day network....

Supported Liquid Membrane in Metal Ion Separation: An Overview

Using liquid membrane and, in particular, supported liquid membrane (SLM) is a novel method of separation in comparison to other methods such as adsorption, extraction and ion exchange. SLM is a combination of simultaneous extraction and disposal whose high efciency and capability is proven by many studies. So far, many researchers have utilized SLM in various scientifc...

Robotic tools for deep water archaeology: Surveying an ancient shipwreck with an autonomous underwater vehicle

The goals of this field note are twofold. First, we detail the operations and discuss the results of the 2005 Chios ancient shipwreck survey. This survey was conducted by an international team of engineers, archaeologists and natural scientists off the Greek island of Chios in the northeastern Aegean Sea using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) built specifically for high-resolution site in...
