Evaluation of Total Antioxidant, Total Calcium, Selenium, Insulin, Free Triiodothyronine and Free Thyroxine Levels in Cows with Ketosis
Authors
Abstract:
Ketosis is an important metabolic disease of high milk-producing cows. There are significant changes in many metabolite and hormonal concentrations in metabolic diseases. This study was carried out to assess the concentrations calcium (Ca), selenium (Se), total antioxidant (TAOC), insulin, free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) in cows with subclinical and clinical ketosis. This study included 20 dairy cows within the first two months of lactation, aged between 4-8 years. Cows with ß-hydroxybutyrate acid (BHBA) concentrations 1.20 mmol/L were considered healthy, whereas 1.20 and 1.50 mmol/L were considered subclinical and 1.60-2.20 mmol/L were classified as clinically ketotic. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT),low density lipoprotein (LDH), glucose, Ca, plasma TAOC capacity and BHBA concentrations were performed spectrophotometrically. Serum insulin, free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine concentrations were measured using the chemi-luminescence method. Serum Se concentrations were measured using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In conclusion, significant changes were noted in decreased concentrations of TAOC, Ca, Se, fT3, fT4 and insulin in cows with subclinical and clinical ketosis. The study identified important parameters, changes in the levels of these parameters will be important in determining the treatment and prognosis of the disease. Their use may also help reduce the economic losses suffered by dairy farmers as a result of the disease.

ƒÊg per 100ml plasma, respectively. Mean normal fT3 and fT4, calculated from tT3, tT4 and EF values of T3 and T4, were 2.43 and 2.21mƒÊg per 100ml plasma, respectively. The fT3 values can be obtained by the present method more easily and speedily than by the method of Nauman et al. The present fT4 values, in con sideration of BEI and the percentage of T4 in plasma, represent a more accurate one...
full texttotal thyroxine, free TBG capacity, and free thyroxine index using Sephadex G-25 and '25I-labelled triiodothyronine and thyroxine
SYNOPSIS A trial was carried out on 134 patients of new kits (Ames Co) using columns of Sephadex G-25 for the determination of serum total thyroxine (Tetralute test) and for the indirect estimation of serum free thyroxine-binding globulin capacity (Trilute test). Both new methods were quicker and easier than the reference resin methods and of similar precision. The two measurements when combine...

A reliable method has been developed for the determination of total serum T3, dialyzable fraction (DFT3), and absolute concentration of free T3 (AFT3). Total T3 values (mean +/- SD) were: healthy euthyroid subjects, 0.33 +/- 0.07 mug per 100 ml; hyperthyroid patients, 0.71 +/- 0.1 mug per 100 ml; hypothyroid, 0.10 +/- 0.03 mug per 100 ml. Values (mean +/- SD) for DFT3 in these groups were 0.46 ...

Background and objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the physicochemical properties of saliva such as flow rate, pH, buffering capacity, calcium level, total protein and total antioxidant levels in caries free and caries active children. Materials and methods: The present study included one hundred and twenty healthy children who were divided into two gr...

Blood was taken from women in each trimester of pregnancy at routine antenatal visits. Further samples were collected from an age matched control group of euthyroid women taking no medication. Free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine concentrations were measured by direct radioimmunoassay (Amerlex Kit methods, Amersham International, Amersham, Buckinghamshire).2 These free hormone assays use th...

Although the normal thyroid gland secretes both levothyroxine (L-T4) and levotriiodothyronine (L-T3), normalization of serum TSH with L-T4-replacement therapy alone in hypothyroidism is generally believed to result in a normal serum L-T3 and to reflect a euthyroid state. However several recent studies suggest that this may not be the case. Accordingly, the relationship between serum free L-T4 a...
