Evaluation of Rating Scale Mental Effort (RSME) effectiveness for mental workload assessment in nurses
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Mental workload is one of the factors that influence individuals’ performance in the work environment as well as their efficiency and productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Rating Scale Mental Effort (RSME) for mental workload in nurses. Materials and Methods: This study was descriptive and cross-sectional conducted on 75 nurses. For assessment of mental workload, first NASA task load index (NASA-TLX) and then RSME were measured. After from data gathering, the data were analyzed using SPSS, descriptive statistics, Student’s independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation test. Results: The results of the assessment workload using RSME and NASA-TLX index of nurses showed that nurses' workload was high. Pearson correlation test regression coefficient showed a good correlation between scores of RSME and NASA-TLX index (r = 0.72) (r2 = 0.51). Also there was no significant association between age and work experience with mental workload score in RMSE (P = 0.09) (P = 0.08) and NASA-TLX index (P = 0.08) (P = 0.06). Student’s t-test showed that no significant relationship was observed between sex and scores of RMSE (P = 0.08) and NASA-TLX index (P = 0.07). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that RMSE is a good method for assessing mental workload and there was acceptable correlation with NASA-TLX valid indices. RMSE index can be used to assess the mental workload.

Evaluation of Mental Workload among ICU Ward's Nurses
BACKGROUND High level of workload has been identified among stressors of nurses in intensive care units (ICUs). The present study investigated nursing workload and identified its influencing perfor-mance obstacles in ICUs. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted, in 2013, on 81 nurses working in ICUs in Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran, Iran. NASA-TLX was applied for assessment of wo...

Background and objectives: Nurses due to the nature of their job faced with significant mental workload. This can cause nursing occupational accidents. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of mental workload on occupational accidents in teaching hospital nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study was conducted from May to...
full textMental Workload: Assessment, Prediction and Consequences
I describe below the manner in which workload measurement can be used to validate models that predict workload. These models in turn can be employed to predict the decisions that are made, which select a course of action that is of lower effort or workload, but may also be of lower expected value (or higher expected cost). We then elaborate on four different contexts in which these decisions ar...
full textThe Mental Workload and Its Correlated Factors in Nurses Working in Intensive Care Units
Introduction: One of the factors influencing the behavior and performance of nurses at the workplace is the mental workload. It is the amount of mental effort that a person uses during doing his or her task. Objective: The current study aimed at evaluating the mental workload and its related factors in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) affiliated to medical and educational centers of Guilan Univer...
full textModels of Mental Workload 3 Subjective Measures of Mental Workload
The primary objective of this research project was to investigate models for monitoring and predicting subjective workload in the control of complex systems. Such models would enable systems to use workload levels to distribute tasks optimally in addition to identifying levels of workload which could lead to a serious breakdown in performance. In the aircraft-pilot system, for example, such cap...
