Abstract:

The metallurgical and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V/(WC-Co) friction welds have ben investigated. The microstructure close to the bondline comprised a mixture of acicular and equiaxed α plus β phases. The diffusion of elements in the welded specimens has been detected. The fracture strengths of Ti6Al4V/(WC-Co) friction welds markedly improved when the cobalt content in the (WC-Co) carbide substrate increased. &#10During the three-point bend testing of Ti6Al4V/WC-6wt.%Co welds, the crack initiated at the bondline region at the periphery of the weld and then propagated into the brittle (WC-6wt.%Co) substrate, while with the Ti6Al4V/WC-11 wt.%Co and Ti6Al4V/WC-24wt.%Co welds, the crack initiated and propagated at the bondline region.&#10&#10Keywords: Friction welding, Ti6Al4V alloy, Cemented tungsten carbide, Microstructure, Fracture strength &#10

Microstructure and mechanical properties of friction spot welds of dissimilar AA 5754

In the present study, friction spot welding or refill friction stir spot welding was performed to consolidate dissimilar AA5754 Al and AZ31 Mg alloys. The intermetallic compounds of Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2 were primarily found in the weld, distributed at the interface between the base materials and in the Al top sheet. The distribution of the intermetallic compounds and the interfacial area between...

Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded copper / 316L stainless steel dissimilar metals

In the present research, friction stir welding (FSW) process was used for butt joining of pure copper plate to 316L stainless steel plate. Mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of the joint were evaluated by microhardness and tensile tests as well as optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that microstructure of the weld nugget (WN) has fine grains where...

Effect of Carbide Particle Size on the Microstructure, Mechanical properties, and Wear Behavior of HVOF-sprayed WC-17% Co Coatings

This study investigates the effect of carbide particle size on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and abrasive wear resistance of WC-17%Co HVOF-sprayed coatings. The characteristics of WC-1, WC-2, and WC-3 coatings with carbide sizes of 1 µm, 0.9 µm, and 0.5 µm, respectively, were also investigated. WC-1 coating experienced the maximum carbon loss of 42%, while WC-2 and WC-3 coatings un...
