Abstract:

Introduction: Sealing pits and fissures was introduced as an approach to prevent occlusal caries for more than two decades. The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of flow able resin reinforced glass ionomer (Ionoseal) with other materials used as fissure sealants. Methods: In this in vitro study, 50 premolar teeth of human free of any caries were selected. Fissurotomy was done with fissure bur. The samples were randomly categorized into five groups (Fissurit FX, Fuji II light-cured,Grandio flow, Ionoseal). Ionoseal was assessed by using two methods: with and without etching and bonding agent prior to sealant application. After sealant placement, all surfaces of the teeth except 2 mm area around the sealant margins were covered with two layers of nail polish. The specimens were thermocycled, and they were sectioned after immersing into a 0.5 % basic fuchsine solution. The amount of microleakage was examined by stereomicroscope. Results: The microleakage comparisons of groups indicated that Ionoseal without etching and bonding application had significantly greater microleakage than the other groups (p<0.001), while there was statistically no significant difference between the microleakage of Ionoseal and the other groups after etching and bonding application (p>0.05). Conclusions: By considering isolation difficulties in children and observing high amount of Ionoseal microleakage (without etching and bonding application), the samples need to be etched and bonded like other resin-based materials before Ionoseal placement in order to achieve clinically desirable microleakage outcomes.

Microleakage of an adhesive system used as a fissure sealant.

AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the microleakage of pit and fissure sealants in primary teeth and to determine if multi-step methods should produce better results in terms of microleakage prevention. METHODS AND MATERIALS A total of 40 intact primary molars were randomly assigned to one of four sealant groups: resin based sealant Ultraseal XT (US - Ultradent) (Group 1, n=10); adh...

Evaluation of pumice, fissure enameloplasty and air abrasion on sealant microleakage.

PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate microleakage of pit and fissure sealants after using three different pit and fissure preparation techniques: (1) traditional pumice prophylaxis and acid etching, (2) fissure enameloplasty and acid etching and (3) air abrasion and acid etching. METHODS Sixty extracted third molars with no clinical evidence of caries were randomly divid...

Effect of Different Enamel Preparation Methods on Microleakage of Fissure Sealant: An In Vitro Study

Objective: Lack of a dental material with optimal adhesion and sealability is an important challenge in modern dentistry leading to marginal leakage. There are controversies on the necessity of enamel preparation in pit and fissure sealant therapy and its effect on decreasing the microleakage therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to assess the amount of microleakage with and without ename...

Marginal Microleakage of Conventional Fissure Sealants and Self-Adhering Flowable Composite as Fissure Sealant in Permanent Teeth

OBJECTIVES Application of sealants is a safe and effective way to prevent occlusal caries in the posterior teeth. A successful sealant therapy depends on good isolation. Decreased steps of adhesive application may enable proper isolation and use of self-adhering flowable composites for sealant therapy. This study sought to compare the marginal microleakage of fissure sealants and self-adhering ...

A Laboratory Evaluation of a New Pit and Fissure Sealant

A variety of pit and fissure sealants are used clinically to protect the occlusal surfaces of teeth against dental caries. A new chemically activated bis-GMA type sea lant, Delton Pit and Fissure Sealant, has recently be come commercially available. The Delton Etching So lution supplied with the sealant contains 35 per cent orthophosphoric acid. The tensile bond strength of this sealant to e...
