Evaluation of a systemic change of Superficial X-ray tube characteristics
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Very low, Low and Medium X-ray machines are used extensively for Superficial Radiation Therapy mostly used for Basal Cell, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma skin cancers. In most of cases, Superficial X-ray Therapy (SXRT) is preferred to Electron beams generated using a linear accelerator. SXRT tube characteristics may vary with the use of the machine for a long time. This study investigates the variation of machine output characteristics acquired during machine commissioning and applied for treatment planning system. Materials and Methods: A Gulmay D3150 Superficial Unit was used for all data collected. At the first stage, beam quality index, half Value Layer (HVL), radiation beam profiles in different depths for a range of applicator for all available applicators were collected. At the end, machine output was also compared with baseline established during the machine commissioning. Results: Result shows that there is a systemic variation of the beam quality index up to 4.3%. Although results are found to be within tolerance, but a systemic variation of the data acquired shows that machine characteristics are modified. Conclusion: As a systemic change of machine output is observed, based on data achieved, more detailed QA checks, annual QA program and re-commissioning of the machine for more accurate treatment is recommended.

Evaluation of depth dose characteristics of superficial X-rays machine using different kVp and applicators diameter
Background: Radiotherapy Treatment Planning requires different dosimetric quantities as input in order to calculate a desired dose distribution. This study has been focused to evaluate the depth dose characteristics of superficial X-rays being used for radiotherapy treatment. Materials and Methods: Computerized 3-D water phantom of multi-data system was used. The measurements were made...
full textEvaluation of the Effect of Source Geometry on the Output of Miniature X-ray Tube for Electronic Brachytherapy through Simulation
Objective: The use of miniature X-ray source in electronic brachytherapy is on the rise so there is an urgent need to acquire more knowledge on X-ray spectrum production and distribution by a dose. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of target thickness and geometry at the source of miniature X-ray tube on tube output.Method: Five sources were simulated based on problems e...
full textCalculation of x-ray spectra emerging from an x-ray tube. Part I. electron penetration characteristics in x-ray targets.
The penetration characteristics of electron beams into x-ray targets are investigated for incident electron kinetic energies in the range 50-150 keV. The frequency densities of electrons penetrating to a depth x in a target, with a fraction of initial kinetic energy, u, are calculated using Monte Carlo methods for beam energies of 50, 80, 100, 120 and 150 keV in a tungsten target. The frequency...
