Abstract:

A finite element program based on elastic –plastic model of Mohr-Coulomb criterion was used to evaluate the bearing capacity coefficients of soil under shallow strip flexible footing . The results were compared with others’ analytical results and it was found that the present study could offer quite consistent and rather precise values for the bearing capacity coefficients . &#10&#10The effect of different parameters such as E , υ, φ ,ψ ,γ , type of mesh idealization ,type of elements ,type of load distribution at the footing base have been examined and some new results obtained and discussed. The main conclusion can be summarized as : that the values of bearing capacity coefficients for any particular amount of friction angle should not be expressed as a single number solely dependent on the friction angle ,but the accurate values must be considered as the values dependent on some other effective parameters , which have been mentioned above .&#10Keywords : soil bearing capacity , finite element , Mohr-Coulomb , shallow footing&#10

Elasto-Plastic Finite Element Evaluation of Flexible Pavements Based on Shakedown Concept

In this paper, three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis was performed on flexible pavements under vertical repeated traffic loads to evaluate their shakedown behavior. Six different pavements with different structural number (SN) were modeled and subjected to a wide range of cyclic vehicle loads. Shakedown limits were obtained considering both failure and serviceability restrain...

Failure mechanism and soil deformation pattern of soil beneath interfering square footings

In this research, the variation of ultimate bearing capacity, failure mechanism and deformation pattern of soil beneath two closely square footings have been studied using numerical methods. It is assumed that the adjacent footings are constructed on the surface of sand. The presented numerical analyses are based on explicit-finite-difference code, FLAC3D. The elasto-plastic behavior of soil is...

A Finite Element Study of Elasto-plastic Hemispherical Contact

This work presents a finite element study of elasto-plastic hemispherical contact. The results are normalized such that they are valid for macro contacts (e.g., rolling element bearings) and micro contacts (e.g., asperity contact). The material is modeled as elastic-perfectly plastic. The numerical results are compared to other existing models of spherical contact, including the fully plastic c...
