Evaluating the Clinical Course of Patent Ductus Arteriosus after Discharge and Comparing in Therapies Techniques
Authors
Abstract:
Background Patent ductus arteriosus is an open channel between the aorta and pulmonary artery. The study aimed to evaluate the clinical course of patent ductus arteriosus after discharge and comparing in therapies technique. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional and inferential- descriptive study was performed in the hospitals of city of Zahedan-Iran in the period of one decade from 2005 to 2015. The study populations were all patients with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and these patients followed for at least one year after discharge from the hospitals due to the treatment with one of the Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), Amplatzer, surgery and medical techniques. 144 patients were assessed and the results of echocardiographic findings recorded in pre-determined data collection form and analyzed using SPSS version 15.0. Results No residuals for VATS treatment after hospital discharge, but in the Amplatzer the rate of residual was 13.3% when the higher rate of 20% was for surgery. The highest rate of residual for PDA closure was 23.5% in medical treatment. In the treatment methods comparison analysis in respect to the size left atrium-to-aorta (LA / AO) changes from one month to one year observed a significant difference in the methods of VATS, Amplatzer and Surgery in which illustrate the left heart cavities that represent a great relief due to passing time occurred. Conclusion From the study concluded that in the methods of VATS, Amplatzer and surgery a closed PDA needs time to become normal left chambers by changes in LA / AO, but in the medical method, not observed any changes in LA / AO. The results showed any residual due to VATS method after discharge from hospital, but surgeryandAmplatzerhad very low rates.

Intravenous Paracetamol and Patent Ductus Arteriosus Closure
Background: Standard medical treatments for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure are, including indomethacin/ibuprofen and surgical ligation. Nowadays, a new strategy to close PDA is the use of paracetamol. The present study aimed to describe the use of intravenous (IV) paracetamol for PDA closure in neonates who present a contraindication to ibuprofen or ibuprofen failure with no possibility...
full textPatent ductus arteriosus in a lamb: A case report
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent patency of a vessel normally present in the fetus that connects the pulmonary arterial system to the aorta. The ductus arteriosus fails to close at birth when breathing commences and placental blood circulation is removed. Closure of the ductus arteriosus arises in response to decline pulmonary vascular resistance and increased systemic vascular re...

The diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus is difficult when the classic continuous murmur is not present. In infancy, in the presence of cardiac decompensation and when the ductus approximates the aorta in size, the continuous murmur is frequently absent. A correct diagnosis may be important, however, for a large patent ductus arteriosus can cause serious difficulty. Early surgical treatment ma...
full textThe Effect of Oral Ibuprofen on Closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Term Neonates: A Clinical Trial Study
Background The function of ductus arteriosus closes within a few minutes to a few days after birth in term neonates. In some cases, the duct remains open after birth, a condition which is called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). PDA is associated with high rates of neonatal mortality and morbidity. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of...
full textAtypical Patent Ductus Arteriosus
IN OUR EXPERIENCE about 95 per cent of patent ducti have the typical machinery murmur, and present no problem in diagnosis. A continuous murmur maximal in the second to third left intercostal space usually means patent ductus arteriosus. Other sites usually indicate other lesions. The typical machinery murmur reflects a systolic and diastolic pressure gradient between the aorta and pulmonary ar...
