Evaluating Pile Yarn Characteristics in Hand Woven Carpet using Stress-Strain Behavior in Compression

Authors

Abstract:

Many factors such as production methods and structural parameters have distinctive influence on the quality and performance of a hand woven carpet. To investigate the effects of some variables, eighteen samples of carpet vary, in knot density, pile height and percentage of slipe wool, were manufactured. Pile yarn performance was assessed by using load-displacement compression curve, obtained from Zwick tensile tester under cyclic loading, up to 30 kPa. Based on the results, compression and matting of the pile yarn decreased and its elastic recovery increased with the increase in knot density. Increase in pile height caused an increase in the degree of variation for carpet samples. Matting of samples decreased with increase in pile height to certain level, but further increase caused increased reduction in matting. Elastic recovery of pile yarn had a reverse trend as the pile height changed. Consequently, increase in percentage of slipe wool caused an increase in compression and matting, and also reduction in elastic recovery of pile yarn.

comparison of characteristics of pile yarn and hand-woven carpet made from sheared wool and slipewool

forty sheep skins were allocated into two groups. group one was sheared using shearing machine and group two was chemically dewooled using 15 percent sodium sulfide. results indicated that fibre diameter of slipewool (39.3 ± 2.3 µm) was significantly (p< 0.05) higher than the sheared wool fibers (36.3 ± 0.7 µm), but staple length of slipewool (3.3 ± 0.7 cm) was significantly (p< 0.05) lower tha...

Investigation of Stress-Strain Behavior of Plastic Concrete Using Monotonic Triaxial Compression Tests

In this paper, the mechanical behavior of plastic concrete being used in the cut-off walls of earth dams has been studied. To do the task, triaxial compression tests on the specimens in various ages and mix designs under different confining pressures have been done and the stress-strain behavior of such materials and their strength parameter changes has been experimentally investigated. It has ...

Correcting the stress-strain curve in hot compression test using finite element analysis and Taguchi method

In the hot compression test friction has a detrimental influence on the flow stress through the process and therefore, correcting the deformation curve for real behavior is very important for both researchers and engineers. In this study, a series of compression tests were simulated using Abaqus software. In this study, it has been employed the Taguchi method to design experiments by the factor...

Musculoskeletal problems in Iranian hand-woven carpet industry: guidelines for workstation design.

Long hours of static work with awkward posture at traditionally designed looms can cause high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among carpet weavers. A comprehensive study was conducted in this industry with the objectives of determination of MSDs symptoms prevalence; identification of major factors associated with MSDs symptoms in carpet weaving occupation; and development of guid...

Psychosocial Factors and Musculoskeletal Pain Among Rural Hand-woven Carpet Weavers in Iran

BACKGROUND Musculoskeletal pain (MSP) is a common and disabling problem among carpet weavers and is linked to physical and psychosocial factors of work. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MSP, its psychosocial risk factors, and association of pain in each pair of anatomical sites among carpet weavers. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed among 546 hand-woven carpet weave...
