Ethical Description of God in Avicenna`s Philosophy

Authors

Abstract:

Some descriptions such as necessity, power and life have been used in philosophy to introduce God, but in religious holy texts such as Quran some descriptions such as justice, forgiveness, kindness, and faithfulness are mentioned which are known as ethical descriptions in human conventional language. Some people have undermined the possibility of ethical description of God by attributing ethics to Godchr('39')s commands and inhibitions so that in general, this viewpoint has been attributed to Ashchr('39')arites in Islam world, but the question is that whether God is eligible of ethical descriptions. Having analytico-descriptive and sometimes critical approaches, this paper investigates some requirements of Godchr('39')s ethical description like entrance of ethics in philosophical sciences and position of ethical propositions in Avicennachr('39')s thoughts based upon two interpretations from Mohaqiq Lahiji and Mohaqiq Esfehani. Finally, the study proves that based upon Mohaqiq Lahijichr('39')s commentary, from Avicennachr('39')s viewpoint, one can consider that God is qualified of ethical qualities and describe Him with ethical descriptions. Some challenges of Godchr('39')s ethical description are also responded in the study.

PHILOSOPHY Ever since the time of Pascal men have feared that the 'God' worshipped by believers and the 'God' contemplated by philosophers were somehow different. The former was personal, historically active, slow to anger and plentiful in mercy: the latter was dubiously able to be described in personal terms at all, and infinite in such a way as to baffle the imagination. The 'God' of the form...

Critics in turn have raised a number of now-classic challenges. Ethical dilemmas: should scientists, god or lawyers decide?

new. Most famously perhaps, it was Galileo’s scientific challenge to ecclesiastical doctrine that threatened to undermine the power of the church. A similar struggle is developing in our society today, except that this time the tables appear to have been turned: the power of science has grown so greatly that we are now able to play God ourselves. Indeed, the questions that are now being asked a...
