Abstract:

Abstract Erosion and sedimentation are the most complicated problems in hydrodynamic which are very important in water-related projects of arid and semi-arid basins. For this reason, the presence of suitable methods for good estimation of suspended sediment load of rivers is very valuable. Solving hydrodynamic equations related to these phenomenons and access to a mathematical-conceptual model is very difficult and in most cases, necessary data for these models are not available. On the other hand, most of the widely-used experimental methods are not accurate-enough. The principles of wise method are: using the hidden knowledge in the data; effort to extract intrinsic relations between data; and generalizing them to other situations. Artificial neural network is one of the most important methods of artificial intelligence in which by inspiring from the model of human brain while performing training process, data-related information are stored into weights of network. The aim of this research is using MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) neural network to obtain sediment rating curve. After entering input patterns into the network and defining a neuron for input and a neuron for output layers and performing repeated trial and error, optimum architecture (topology) of MLP network was defined as a network with 5 neuron for hidden layers and Hyperbolic tangent activation function for the first and second hidden layers and Linear function for the third hidden layer.

Runoff and sediment yield modeling using WEPP in a semi-arid environment (Case study: Orazan Watershed)

Water erosion is a major environmental problem in many parts of the world. Majority of semi-arid countries are concerned because of their specific climate and soils sensitivity, but also because of the recent intensification of human activities and agricultural practices. Accurate estimation of water erosion for various land-use and climate scenarios is so an important key to define sustainable...

Modelling suspended sediment flow in arid upland basins

A conceptual basin model of the instantaneous unit sediment graph was developed for sediment graph prediction from arid upland basins by routing mobilized sediments through a series of linear reservoirs. The sediment graphs generated by convolution of the instantaneous unit sediment graph compared reasonably well with the observed ones for four representative arid upland sub-basins in the Luni ...

Comparison and evaluation of intelligent models for river suspended sediment estimation (case study: Kakareza River, Iran)

Sediment transport constantly influences river and civil structures and the lack ofinformation about its exact amount makes management efforts less effective. Hence, achieving a proper procedure to estimate the sediment load in rivers is important. We usedsupport vector machine model to estimate the sediments of the Kakareza River in LorestanProvince and the results were compared with those obta...

Groundwater level fluctuation forecasting Using Artificial Neural Network in Arid and Semi-Arid Environment

In arid and semi-arid environments, groundwater plays a significant role in the ecosystem. In the last decades, groundwater levels have decreased due to the increasing demand for water, weak irrigation management and soil damage. For the effective management of groundwater, it is important to model and predict fluctuations in groundwater levels. In this study, groundwater table in Kashan plain ...
