Estimating of geotechnical properties of clay soil with dynamic cone penetration (DCP) test

Authors

Abstract:

Dynamic cone penetration (DCP) test is used more in pavement design and construction, and less for subsurface geotechnical investigation and clay core dam. In the present article, evaluating geotechnical parameters of Sanandaj’s clay in the western region of Iran using the DCP test was taken into account. Accordingly, 6 trial pits with maximum depths of 15 m were excavated manually in various sites of Sanandaj on clay soils (CL). During the excavation process, 3 series of DCP tests were carried out and repeated in the pits after excavating every one meter. The soil samples for the selected sites were also obtained for the laboratory tests including water content, grain size, Atterberg limits, and triaxial compression tests. Based on the results of the experiments, the DCP test was repeatable (CoV<30%). The relationships between Dynamic Penetration Index (DPI), liquid index (LI), undrained shear strength (Cu) and dry density (gd) of the clay soil were also obtained with a high coefficient of determination (R2>83%). Using the DCP test, geotechnical properties of the clay (CL) can be investigated rapidly and inexpensively

Using Miniature Cone Penetration Test (Mini-CPT) to determine engineering properties of sandy soils

In-situ testing techniques have proven to be successful in improving the speed and reliability of geotechnical investigations. One of the most common in-situ methods in engineering geology and site investigation is Cone Penetration Test (CPT), which is mainly used for characterization of soils, as it is a robust, simple, fast, reliable and economic test that can provide continuous soundings of ...

Evaluation of Properties of Soil Subgrade Using Dynamic Cone Penetration Index – A Case Study

––The performance of pavements depends to a large extent on the strength and stiffness of the subgrades. Subgrade strength (CBR) plays a major role in pavement design. Since determination of CBR value in field requires need of equipment and also time consuming alternatively one can be predict CBR value of subgrade in field from other soil support tests namely Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Index (DC...

Influential Parameters in Estimating Soil Properties from Cone Penetrating Test: An Artificial Neural Network Study

The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is a common in-situ test which generally investigates a much greater volume of soil more quickly than possible from sampling and laboratory tests. Therefore, it has the potential to realize both cost savings and assessment of soil properties rapidly and continuously. The principle objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of using a...
