EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY

Authors: not saved
Abstract:

A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission line stellar objects, including one low and one high redshift quasar. One field has a surface density of emission-line galaxies a factor of four higher than any of the other three fields, but the same density of galaxies with resolved HI1 regions.

The Missing Cv Population: Results from an Objective Prism Survey

We present the results of a search for cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the Calán-Tololo survey. We detected a total number of 21 CVs, 12 of them are previously unknown objects. Our results suggest that the mismatch between the theoretically predicted sample and the observed one is not due to observational bias but has to be resolved by a revision of the theoretical models. 1. The survey Theoreti...

ASTROPHYSICS H α Objective Prism Survey of Abell 1060

As part of a continuing study of the effect of cluster environment on the star formation properties of galaxies, we have undertaken an Hα objective prism survey of the nearby cluster, Abell 1060. We detect 33 galaxies in emission, 24 of which are cluster members. We present new radial velocity measurements and Hα+[N ii] equivalent widths and fluxes for a number of these galaxies. We distinguish...

Filamentary shell structures from the AAO/UKST Ha survey

Here we present the first results of a search for new optical supernova remnant candidates and other filamentary objects on films produced by the Anglo-Australian Observatory/UK Schmidt Telescope Há Survey. Sixty-one fields, or 26% of the Galactic plane survey fields, have been visually examined. This has resulted in the detection of four newlarge diameter filamentary structures, and the discov...

Finding the First Stars: The Hamburg/ESO Objective Prism Survey

The Hamburg/ESO survey (HES; [4]) is an objective-prism survey for bright quasars based on IIIa-J plates taken with the ESO Schmidt telescope and its 4◦ prism. It covers the total southern extragalactic sky (δ <+2◦. 5; |b| & 30◦). All 380 Schmidt plates (effective area ∼ 7 000 square degrees) have been taken, and have been digitized and reduced in Hamburg. The spectral range of the HES plates i...

Fabry-Perot Survey of Emission-Line Galaxies

The recent results from a deep Fabry-Perot survey of nearby active and star-forming galaxies are presented. Line-emitting material is detected over two orders of magnitude in galactocentric radius, from the 100-pc scale of the active or starbursting nucleus out to several 10s of kpc, sometimes well beyond the optical confines of the host galaxies. The excitation and dynamical properties of the ...
