Effect of Spiritual Intelligence Training on Hope of Patients with Chronic Renal Failure under Hemodialysis: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:

Introduction & Objective: Hemodialysis as the most prevalent method of dialysis is a procedure for the elimination of fluid and toxic material especially the waste Uremic products from the body of patients with chronic renal failure. Since the frequent accomplishment of this treatment cause negative psychological changes especially hopelessness of patients with chronic renal failure in addition to social problems; and spiritual intelligence can help people to solve the problems regarding the meaning, life, and the values, so this study carried out to determine the effect of spiritual intelligence training on hope of patients with chronic renal failure under hemodialysis. Materials & Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 89 patients who referred to the Hemodialysis Unit of Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Yasuj, Iran in 2018 were selected using convenience sampling. Among them, 68 eligible patients divided into intervention and control group with the equal member using quadratic block random allocation. While the control group received routine treatment and care, the spiritual intelligence training accomplished for intervention group based on the protocol. In addition to completing demographic information, at the beginning of the study and after completion of research intervention, the hope of all participated patients in the research as a dependent variable measured using Snyder’s Hope questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software, through Chi-square test, independent sample t-test, and paired sample t-test. Results: At the beginning of the study, there was no statistical difference between the intervention group and the control group regarding demographic characteristics, amount of the spiritual intelligence and hope (P>0.05). After the completion of the research intervention, the amount of hope in the intervention group (20.82±3.21) was significantly higher than the amount of hope in the control group (18.03±3.41) (P<0.05).
