Effect of patient education about patient-controlled analgesia pump before surgery on severity of pain, nasia and vomiting after Spinal culumn surgery

Objective: Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the Effect of patient education about patient-controlled analgesia pump before surgery on severity of pain, nausea and vomiting after Spinal column surgery. Material and Methods: The present study was a randomized controlled clinical trial. Sixty patients that were in the spinal column surgery list, selected by accessible method and randomly assigned into control and intervention (30 subjects groups. Both groups received routine training in the use of the pump in the recovery department, but the intervention group received a 15-minute face-to-face intervention session using a sample of the PCA pump. Postoperative pain intensity, nausea, and vomiting in three times, 2, 4, 24 hours after surgery assessed and compared. SPSS version 16 was used to analyze the data. Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the control and intervention groups regarding the severity of pain (p <0.001). In the intervention group, the severity of pain decreased compared control group. However, there was no significant difference in nausea and vomiting between two groups (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Preoperative pain management education program without create significant change in nausea and vomiting cause effective pain control in patient’s postoperative spinal column surgery. So before surgery, it is a good time to education of patients.
