Effect of macro green algae extract on tomato (Lycopersicum sculentum Mill.) seedling growth characteristics

author

Abstract:

The effect of macro green algae (Chaetomorpha gracilis) inf Bandar-Abbas and filamentous green algae (Spirogyra sp.) in the Sirch river (Kerman Province) were assayed on growth characteristics of the tomato (Lycopersicum sculentum). In the seed priming experiment, we collected hot water extracts of green algae (Chaetomorpha gracilis) from Bandar Abbas seashores and filamentous green algae (Spirogyra sp.) from Sirch River, Kerman Province. Gold seaweed extract (commercial seaweed extract), distilled water, salicylic acid, ascorbic acid and control were used for the seed germination assay. Mean comparison of seed germination data revealed that Gold seaweed extract showed the highest germination percentage followed by extracts of filamentous green algae (Spirogyra sp.) from the Sirch River and Chaetomorpha gracilis from Bandar Abbas seashores. Primed seed with Chaetomorpha gracilis and Gold seaweed extract had the highest stem and root lengths. In the second experiment, we analyzed the effect of algae extract on growth characteristics of tomato seedlings, treatments of hot water extracts of Chaetomorpha gracilis and filamentous green algae of Sirch, Gold seaweed extract, liquid kelp foliar fertilizer, and distilled water under greenhouse conditions.  Extracts of Chaetomorpha gracilis, Gold seaweed and liquid kelp foliar fertilizer had the highest positive effects on root and shoot length, total chlorophyll and leaf width.

Effect of Static Magnetic Field on Germination and Seedling Attributes in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

An experiment was conducted at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi to study the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment using different combinations of magnetic field intensities and time duration, on germination and seedling attributes in North Indian variety of tomato (var. Pusa Ruby). Seeds were exposed to static magnetic fields (SMF) of strength 50, 100 and 120 mT for 5, 10, 15, 2...

Allelopathic Effect of Aqueous extract of Erythroxylum monogynum Roxb. on Germination and Growth of Solanum lycopersicum Mill. var. PKM-1

Seed germination performance is one of the most essential development stages in medicinal and aromatic plants that may be unfavourably affected by the phytochemicals released from other plants in the soil environment. The present research was conducted in the laboratory to study the allelopathic effect of Erythroxylum monogynum Roxb. to the germination and growth parameters of Solanum lycopersi...

Optimization of Growth Regulators for Shoot Induction and Regeneration of Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.)

Until now numbers of efforts have been made to deduce the optimized conditions for the in vitro regeneration of tomato plant. The optimized conditions deduced are contradictory to each other and to validate the optimum conditions the present investigation was carried out which directs the use of 1.5 mg/l IAA + 1.5 mg/l Zeatin with full strength Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) medium for the developm...
