Abstract:

Background and purpose: Cough, hoarseness, and sore throat are complications of intubation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gargling with honey and lemon water on cough, sore throat, and hoarseness after extubation of endotracheal tube following surgery. Materials and methods: A clinical trial was carried out in 110 patients undergoing surgery in Neyshabur 22 Bahman Hospital, Iran 2020. They were selected using convenience sampling and randomly allocated to experimental or control group. In experimental group, 6 hours after surgery, 30 cc of honey lemon water was gargled, three times, every two hours and then swallowed. The control group received routine care. Postoperative sore throat, cough, and hoarseness were assessed before the intervention, and 12 and 24 hours after extubation of endotracheal tube. Data were analyzed by independent t-test and repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: Findings showed no significant difference between the two groups in cough and sore throat 12 hours after extubation, but the score for hoarseness was lower in experimental group (P= 0.05). Twenty-four hours after extubation, cough (P= 0.001), hoarseness (P= 0.006), and sore throat (P= 0.023) were significantly lower in experimental group. The passage of time was found to significantly affect all three variables (P<0.001). Conclusion: Considering the positive effects of gargling with honey and lemon water in reducing the complications of endotracheal tube and no side effects, it is recommended to be used after extubation. تاثیر بخور اکالیپتوس بر خشونت صدا و گلودرد ناشی از انتوباسیون بعد از عمل جراحی بای پس عروق کرونر

Background and purpose: Sore throat and hoarseness are some postoperative complications following endotracheal intubation and inflammation of the pharynx, larynx, and trachea. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of eucalyptus vapor on sore throat and hoarseness after tracheal extubation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). Materials and methods: In a clinic...

The effect of betamethasone gel in reducing sore throat, cough, and hoarseness after laryngo-tracheal intubation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Tracheal intubation for general anesthesia often leads to traumatization of the airway mucosa resulting in postoperative sore throat, hoarseness and cough. This study was undertaken to determine the effects of betamethasone gel in reducing these complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred patients (ASA I-II) to undergo endotracheal intubation, were randomly divided eq...

Gender differences in sore throat and hoarseness following endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask airway: a prospective study

BACKGROUND Postoperative sore throat and hoarseness are common minor complications following airway manipulation. This study was primarily done to determine gender differences in the incidence of these symptoms and the location of POST after laryngeal mask airway (LMA) and endotracheal tube (ETT). METHODS A total of 112 men and 185 women were included during a four month period. All patients ...

Prophylactic Effects of Lidocaine or Beclomethasone Spray on Post-Operative sore Throat and Cough after Orotracheal Intubation

Introduction: Post-operative sore throat and cough are common complications of endotracheal intubation. These conditions may be very distressing for the patient and may lead to unpleasant memories. This study was performed in order to determine whether beclomethasone and lidocaine spray could reduce the frequency of post-operative sore throat and hoarseness after tracheal extubation.  Materials...

The Effect of Flurbiprofen on Postoperative Sore Throat and Hoarseness After LMA-ProSeal Insertion: A Randomised, Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that flurbiprofen lozenges reduce the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (LMA) related symptoms of Post Operative Sore Throat (POST), hoarseness and dysphagia compared to placebo lozenges. METHODS Eighty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I-II patients undergoing general anaesthesia with LMA were included in this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinic...

Role of Dexamethasone in Reducing Postextubation Sore Throat, Hoarseness of Voice and Cough after General Anaesthesia

ResultWe found that at 1 hr and at 6 hr after tracheal extubation, the incidence of postoperative sore throat and hoarseness, along with the severity of sore throat were lower in Group D2 and D1 compared with Group P (P less than 0.05) and at 24 hours after tracheal extubation, the incidence of these variables were comparable. There was no complication associated with the single dose of prophyl...
