Abstract:

In this study, the effect of foliar spray of sodium nitroprusside (100 μM) as a nitric oxide donor on iron deficiency stress alleviation in cucumber plant was investigated. The results indicated that iron deficiency stress reduced growth parameters, total chlorophyll content, Fe content and antioxidant enzymes activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase as well as guaiacol peroxidase. Sodium nitroprusside foliar spray resulted in improvement of growth parameters, total chlorophyll content, Fe content and increased activity of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, these results support the biological function of nitric oxide to improve iron availability and damage caused by its deficiency.

Iron-Deficiency Stress Responses in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Roots (A Possible Role for Ethylene?).

Most dicotyledonous species respond to Fe deficiency by developing several mechanisms known as Fe-deficiency stress responses. To study the regulation of these responses, young cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. cv Ashley) were grown in nutrient solution for 11 d, being deprived of Fe during the last 4 or 5 d. Inhibitors of ethylene synthesis (2 or 10 [mu]M aminoethoxyvinylglycine; 10 or 20 [m...

Effect of growth stages on total phenolics content and antioxidant activity of Fumaria vaillantii L.

Background and objectives: Plant extracts and their constituents are known to exert biological effects, especially antioxidant activity. Fumaria vaillantii (Fumariaceae) has several therapeutic effects in traditional medicine. Antioxidants are able to protect the human body from oxidative damage connected to the reaction of free radicals. Synthetic antioxidants have to...

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Nitric Oxide Synthase Associated Gene1 (CsNOA1) Plays a Role in Chilling Stress

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous signaling molecule in plants, transducing information as a result of exposure to low temperatures. However, the underlying molecular mechanism linking NO with chilling stress is not well understood. Here, we functionally characterized the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) nitric oxide synthase-associated gene, NITRIC OXIDE ASSOCIATED 1 (CsNOA1). Expression analysis of...

Effect of Foliar Spray of Zinc Oxide on Some Antioxidant Enzymes Activity of Sunflower under Salt Stress

This study investigated the effects of foliar application of normal and nanoparticles of zinc oxide (ZnO) on the growth, proline content, and some antioxidant enzyme activities of sunflower cultivars at different salinity levels. Treatments included five cultivars (Helianthus annuus L. cvs. Alstar, Olsion, Yourflor, Hysun36, and Hysun33), two salinity levels (0 and 100 mM NaCl), and three folia...

Exogenous Melatonin Improves Antioxidant Defense in Cucumber Seeds (Cucumis sativus L.) Germinated under Chilling Stress

The relationship between exogenous melatonin applied into cucumber seeds during osmopriming and modifications of their antioxidant defense was studied. Accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, antioxidant enzyme activities and glutathione pool were investigated in embryonic axes isolated from the control, osmoprimed, and osmoprimed with melatonin seeds. Germinating cucumber seeds are very sensitive t...
