Ectoparasites fauna of goldfish (Carassius auratus) in north Iran
Authors
Abstract:
The present studywas carried out to survey ectoparasites fauna of gold fish (Carassius auratus) in Mazandaran province (Iran) from April 2009 to March 2010. A total of 200 samples were obtained from 10 ornamental fish supply centers and transferred alive to the laboratory. In this study, the following ectoparasites were isolated: Ichthyophthirius multifillis , Trichodina spp., Gyrodactylus spp., Dactylogyrus vastator, Dactylogyrus baueri and Argulus coregoni. The results revealedthat 28.5% of sampled goldfish were infested with ectoparasites .The frequency of protozoan infestations were 15% (9%I. multifillis and 6% Trichodina spp.), the frequency of monogenean ectoparasite was 12.5% (5% Gyrodactylus spp., 5% D. vastator and 2.5% D. baueri) and that of crustaceans (A. coregoni) was 1%. The most frequently reported infestation was due to I. multifillis causative agent of white spot disease.Enhancing the health management through improving water quality and bio-security is the most effective way to prevent the parasite infestations.

full textLatent inhibition experiments with goldfish (Carassius auratus).
Evidence of latent inhibition was sought in a series of experiments with goldfish. In Experiment 1, goldfish were given nonreinforced preexposure to a color that subsequently predicted shock in an activity conditioning situation; their performance did not differ from that of control animals preexposed to a markedly different color. In Experiment 2, a group of goldfish given nonreinforced preexp...

In the present study, the etiological agent that caused mortality in goldfish at an aquarium company located in Bursa in northwestern Turkey was identified. Diseased fish were lethargic, displaying a loss of appetite, ascites, and exophthalmia. Internal examination revealed that the kidney was surrounded by exudate and that the spleen and liver were pale. Microbiological examination showed that...
full textThe First Record of Argulus foliacesus (Crustacea: Branchiura) Infestation on Lionhead Goldfish (Carassius auratus) in Iran
Argulus foliaceus (Crustacea: Branchiura), or the fish louse, is an ectoparasite of the skin or gill of the fresh water fish species. Clinical signs in infected fish include scratching on aquarium walls, erratic swimming, and poor growth. It causes pathological changes due to direct tissue damage and secondary infections. In the present study, lionhead goldfish (Carassius auratus), taken from a...
full textCharacterization of Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase (GOAT) in goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Ghrelin is the only known hormone posttranslationally modified with an acylation. This modification is crucial for most of ghrelin's physiological effects and is catalyzed by the polytopic enzyme ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT). The aim of this study was to characterize GOAT in a teleost model, goldfish (Carassius auratus). First, the full-length cDNA sequence was obtained by RT-PCR and rapid ...

The effects of concentration (5, 50, and 500 microg/L) and duration (24, 48 h) of exposure to carbofuran, a carbamate insecticide, were assessed on brain catecholamine (norepinephrine [NE] and dopamine), plasma glucose, and hepatic glycogen contents and behavioral activities of goldfish (Carassius auratus). After 24 h of exposure to 50 and 500 microg/L, the level of NE was increased in the olfa...
