Dynamic Mechanical Analysis of Compatibilizer Effect on the Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour-High-Density Polyethylene Composites
Authors
Abstract:
In this study, effect of MAPE (maleic anhydride polyethylene) as the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of wood-flour polyethylene composites has been investigated by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Composites were made at 25% and 50% by weight fiber contents and 1% and 2% compatibilizer respectively. Controls were also made at the same fiber contents without the compatibilizer. Static mechanical tests including tensile and bending tests were performed. Temperature scans in the range of -110 to +100°C was also conducted. Results indicated improvements in the mechanical properties due to the compatibilizer addition. Storage modulus values were higher in the case of coupled composites especially at 50% fiber loading. Glass transition was hard to detect in all composite systems while increasing fiber content slightly shifted alpha transition to higher temperatures. MAPE had negligible effects on the main transitions but the effect of fiber content on the intensity and temperature of alpha transition seemed to be proportional to the fiber content. Mechanical loss factor spectra showed that at 50% fiber content, the compatibilizer caused a reduction in tanδ values indicating less energy loss when the compatibilizer was present.

full textPreliminary study of the physical and mechanical properties of soya stalk flour/high density polyethylene composite
The use of agriculture residues as filler in composites is increasing due to their strength, abundance and low cost. Soya stalks show promising renewable natural fiber. In polyethylene composites the physical and mechanical properties (flexural resistance, tensile, impacted absorbed energy, water uptake and thickness swelling) was examined at different composites. The results showed that, the m...
full textEffects of Fungicides on Mold Resistance and Mechanical Properties of Wood and Bamboo Flour/High- Density Polyethylene Composites
The main objective of this study was to determine the mold resistance and mechanical properties of fungicide-treated wood and bamboo flour/high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. Zinc borate (ZB), 4,5-dichloro2-octyl-isothiazolone (DCOIT), zinc pyrithione (ZPT), and carbendazim (MBC) were used as fungicides. Then, treated and untreated samples were exposed to mold fungi (Aspergillus niger,...

Effect of Styrene Maleic Anhydride on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Recycled Polystyrene Wood Flour Composites
In this work, the influence of three types of styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) oligomers on the adhesion of polystyrene wood plastic composites (WPC) was investigated. The composites were processed on a twin-screw co-rotating extruder below 200°C using 20 wt% of wood flour. The styrene maleic anhydride with different content of maleic anhydride groups, 30%, 25% and 20% (w/w) and levels of 1, 2 an...
