Abstract:

Abstract Case Description A six-month-old female Tibetan spaniel dog with repeated rectal prolapse and unsuccessful treatments was referred to the clinic of faculty of veterinary medicine of Razi University (Kermanshah, Iran). With regarding the patient’s history colopexy was done through celiotomy incision, but 3 days later the patient referred again with recurrence of prolapse. Clinical Findings On abdominal palpation, a sausage like mass was felt in the abdomen. The clinical parameters were in the normal range, but stool samples proved the presence of giardia. The hemagglutination test for parvovirus was positive too. Treatment and Outcome Exploratory celiotomy revealed presence of double intussusception. The intussuscepted segments were edematous and congested with adhesions and signs of devitalization. Resection and re-anastomosis was performed. The patient died 24 hours after surgery. The owner didn’t allow post-mortem examination; though the actual cause of death was remained unknown. The animal death can be related to weakness due to parvovirus and giardia enteritis, delay in treatment of underlying disease, electrolyte imbalance, surgical stress and inadequate postoperative management. Clinical Relevance Puppies and kittens have a much higher incidence of intussusception than adult animals. Any portion of the alimentary tract may be involved, but previous studies have indicated that the majority of intussusceptions in small animal are enterocolic. Prompt and precise diagnosis and accurate treatment with considering underlying diseases such as infectious enteritis and endoparrasitism is very important to save the patient life.

Intestinal intussusception due to a pyogenic granuloma.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG), also known as lobular capillary hemangioma, is a benign vascular tumor, most commonly arising on the skin and the oral mucosa. Gastrointestinal localization of PG, except for the oral cavity, is exceptionally rare. We describe a case of ileal PG occurring in a 13-year-old girl, presenting with intestinal obstruction. Histological examination revealed proliferation of ca...

Intestinal Intussusception Due to Meckel’s Diverticulum

Intestinal intussusception is a common problem in the children, but in adults, it's very unusual. It's responsible for 1-2% of the intestinal obstruction in adults. Patients commonly presents with nonspecific signs and symptoms similar to a bowel obstruction....

Simultaneous double ileoileal intussusception due to Burkitt's lymphoma in a young male

Burkitt's lymphoma is an uncommon cause of intussusception in adults. Double intussusceptions due to Burkitt's lymphoma are extremely rare. We present a case of a 26-year-old man who presented with symptoms of intestinal obstruction and was diagnosed with double ileoileal intussusception at laparotomy. The pathology of the lead points turned out to be Burkitt's lymphoma. This could be the first...

Ileocolic intestinal intussusception in a dog with leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection causing clinical and subclinical disease in dogs, humans, and other mammalian species. Although more than 200 different Leptospira interrogans serovars have been identified (11), the serovars most commonly isolated from dogs with clinical leptospirosis in Southern Germany are L. grippothyphosa and L. saxkoebing (3). However, vaccines currently available in ...

Jejunojejunal Intussusception Due to Intestinal Polypoid Lipomatosis: a case report

Intestinal lipomatosis is a rare disease entity. Few cases have been reported in the literature. It is often associated with characteristic CT findings, making a preoperative diagnosis possible. Here we report a 49-year-old male who suffered from progressive abdominal distension, epigastralgia, nausea and vomiting for 2 days. Plain abdominal radiograph showed distended small bowels. Abdominal C...

Small Intestinal Obstruction with Intussusception due to Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Case Report

Myeloid sarcoma is known to precede the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and can be the only clinical manifestation. Gastrointestinal involvement by AML is rare with the commonest site being small intestine. Patients present with vague abdominal pain and/or obstruction. Prognosis is usually poor as most of them rapidly progress to AML. We report a case of 25-year-old man with complai...
