Does dietary fish oil improve nerve conduction velocity via regulating of blood glucose level in diabetic rat?
author
Abstract:
Although it is a well-established fact that dietary fish oil can improve nerve conduction velocity in diabetic rat, but the exact mechanism of its action is unknown. Therefore, in this study we measured the blood glucose level of all animals for evaluating the possible effect of fish oil in improvement of nerve conduction velocity in diabetic neuropathy via regulation of blood glucose level. For this purpose, 30 male albino rats were randomly assigned to one of the three treatment protocols as follows: control, diabetic and fish oil groups. Blood glucose of animals was determined in all groups at the beginning and at different days after the experiment. Diabetic and fish oil-treated diabetic groups received alloxan (180 mg/kg, s.c.) at the beginning of the experiment. Animals with blood glucose higher than 300 mg/dl were considered diabetic. From the 10th day, Menhaden fish oil was used (by 10% of daily food consumption) through orogastric tubing for ten days. After 20 days, motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) of tibial nerve was measured. It was found out that there was a 17.1% (P

Evaluation of date extract on nerve conduction velocity in male rat
Abstract Introduction: neuropathy is a condition in which the peripheral nervous system is disrupted. The study of the effects of antioxidants on the performance improvement of this system is vital. This study was aimed at the investigation of the effects of date extract on nerve conduction velocity, distal latency, and wave height of the sciatic nerve in male rats. Materials and Methods: thi...
full textEffect of Dexamethasone on Preventing Tibial Nerve Conduction Velocity Loss in Tourniquet Neurepathic Rat
Introduction: Ischaemic-reperfusion nerve injury has been suggested as the mechanism for post-tourniquet limb paralysis. As dexamethasone (Dex) has been shown to Prevent ischaemic-reperfusion process in some tissues, we tested the hypothesis that this drug would reduce tourniquet induced nerve injury. Methods: 36 male Wistar rats (200-250 gr) were chosen and divided randomly into 6 equal grou...
full textRatio of motor nerve conduction velocity to F-wave conduction velocity in diabetic neuropathy.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the usefulness of a new parameter, the ratio of motor nerve conduction velocity to F-wave conduction velocity (M/F ratio), for the differential diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Nerve conduction studies were conducted in 95 patients with diabetic neuropathy, 44 nondiabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy, and 24 normal control subjects....
full textThe effects of lettuce extract on the level of T4, memory and nerve conduction velocity in male rats
Objective: According to the traditional medicine, lettuce can affect nerve conduction velocity and memory. So, to investigate the effect of lettuce seeds extract on body activities, lettuce seeds were used. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the effects of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds extract consumption (in drinking water) on T4 level...
full textPentoxifylline Effects on Nerve Conduction Velocity and Blood Flow in Diabetic Rats
Pentoxifylline has several actions that improve blood rheology and tissue perfusion and may therefore potentially be applicable to diabetic neuropathy. The aims of this study were to ascertain whether 2 weeks of treatment with pentoxifylline could correct nerve conduction velocity and blood flow deficits in 6-week streptozotocin-diabetic rats and to examine whether the effects were blocked by c...
