Distribution and Characterization of Dominant Serovars of Listeria monocytogenes Strains Isolated from Spontaneous Human Abortion in Tehran
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Aims: The aim was to determine the role of dominant serovars of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) in spontaneous abortions, using isolation methods and polymerase change reaction (PCR). Materials and Methods: A total of 258 samples comprising of placental tissue, vaginal swabs and blood were collected from 123 patients with spontaneous abortion. L. monocytogenes was identified and confirmed by culture, biochemical reactions, serological tests, API system, CAMP (Christie, Atkins, Munch and Petersen) test, and hemolysis on sheep blood agar. Phosphatidyl inositol specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) assay, followed by multiplex PCR was applied for detection of serotypes 1/2a and 4b. Result: Out of 258 samples, 28 isolates of L. monocytogenes were identified by different methods. All of the isolates were confirmed by PCR. Of 28 isolated strains, 14(50%) belonged to serovar 1/2a, 10(35.7%) to serovar 4b and 4(14.3%) to other serovars. Conclusions: Based on our study, serovars 1/2a and 4b are dominant serovars as causative agents of human spontaneous abortion due to L. monocytogenes in pregnant women.

Background and Aims: Listeria monocytogenes, a gram positive, facultative, intracellular bacterium is the causative agent of listeriosis that is transmitted to human through raw and ready-to-eat foods. The aim of the present study was to determine dominant serovars of L. monocytogenes isolated from spontaneous abortion using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Materials and Methods: In present s...

Serovars of Lisreria l1Iollocyrogelles were determined. Sera of aborted samples (200) were collected from different hospitals in Tehran and were tested serologically by immunofluorescent antibody methods (IF tests). 137 positive sera were identified. Positive sera were tested against 12 serovars of Listeria l1Iollocytogelles separately. Titers of antibody in patients' sera for all serovars ...

full textListeria Monocytogenes – characterization of strains isolated from clinical severe cases
Listeria monocytogenes became an increasing pathogen involved more frequently in sporadic severe illnesses and outbreaks of foodborne infections. This study investigates in vitro susceptibility of 26 strains of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from the clinical specimens collected between March 2009 and November 2013, from 24 patients hospitalized in three medical institutions in Bucharest. All ...
full textCharacterization of Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated during 2011-2013 from human infections in Switzerland.
Listeria monocytogenes, an emerging foodborne pathogen, can cause in the population at risk severe infections that are associated with high case fatality rates. A total of 93 L. monocytogenes strains isolated from different patients in Switzerland from July 2011 to September 2013 were further characterized. Septicemia was reported for 74.2% of the patients, meningitis for 10.8%, and abortion fo...

Using phenotype techniques, characterization was realized of species and serovars of 255 strains of Listeria isolated from human material: 220-86.3% were from patients with possible invasive disease, while 35-13.7% were from colonized healthy individuals. The strains were collected in several regions of Brazil from 1969-2000. In individuals aged 0-10 or 41-60 years old Listeria monocytogenes wa...
