Abstract:

A mathematical model presented in this paper describes the dispersion and concentration ofcontaminants (fine and coarse) in porous medium with the effect of chemical reaction. Solutetransport in porous media is discussed by means of advection-dispersion equation. The effectof particle mass parameter and reaction rate parameter on the dispersion coefficient and meanconcentration of a chemical solute is studied by introducing a slug of finite length. Analyticalsolutions are obtained by varying the dimensionless time, axial distance and length of thesolute. The results are depicted using graphs.

Emerging Organic Contaminants in Groundwater

Emerging organic contaminants (ECs) are compounds now being found in groundwater from agricultural, urban sources that were previously not detectable, or thought to be significant. ECs include pesticides and degradates, pharmaceuticals, industrial compounds, personal care products, fragrances, water treatment byproducts, flame retardants and surfactants, as well as ‘life-style’ compounds such a...

Gas Absorption with Chemical Reaction in Turbulent Flow

In order to increase the rate of gas absorption, chemical reaction in the liquid phase is considered. The purpose of this paper was to simulate gas absorption process by a liquid film over a spherical packing incorporating eddy viscosity and diffusivity. Second order chemical reaction for two different cases (fast and slow) were considered. The system partial differential equations obtained...

Neural Networks Simulation of the Transport of Contaminants in Groundwater

The performance assessment of an engineered solution for the disposal of radioactive wastes is based on mathematical models of the disposal system response to predefined accidental scenarios, within a probabilistic approach to account for the involved uncertainties. As the most significant potential pathway for the return of radionuclides to the biosphere is groundwater flow, intensive computat...
