Abstract:

Background: The intestinal tract of human can be infected by protozoan parasites. In this short communication, the stool samples were collected from patients with diarrhea referred to Kut hospital, Iraq, and then the parasites (Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium parvum) were considered for molecular identification. Methods: Stool samples were collected from 69 patients with diarrhea and then transferred to laboratory. Protozoan parasites were evaluated by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and phylogenetic tree analysis. Small subunit 18S rRNA region was amplified in the sizes of 514 bp, 409 bp, and 507 pb for G. lamblia, E. histolytica, and C. parvum, respectively. Results: The results of phylogenetic tree analysis showed that G. lamblia had 99% identity to G. lamblia with accession number of DQ157272.1 (and total genetic changes of 0.002%); E. histolytica also had 99% identity to E. histolytica with accession number of GQ423748.1 (total genetic changes of 0.0005%); and C. parvum had 99% identity to C. parvum with accession number of AJ539197.1 (total genetic changes of 0.05%). Conclusion: Gastrointestinal symptoms in the individuals with the studied protozoan parasites can be diagnosed directly by molecular detection and phylogenetic tree analysis with satisfying results. As well as, it can be utilized like a target for therapeutic intervention for these enteric protozoans. DOI: 10.18502/jfqhc.9.4.11378

Comparison of the Triage Micro Parasite Panel and Microscopy for the Detection of Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium parvum in Stool Samples Collected in Kenya

Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium parvum are three of the most important parasitic causes of acute diarrhea worldwide. Laboratory diagnosis of these parasites is usually done by ova and parasite examination (O&P examination) via microscopy. The sensitivity and specificity of O&P examination varies among laboratories and can be labor intensive and time consuming. The T...

Detection of Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, and Cryptosporidium parvum antigens in human fecal specimens using the triage parasite panel enzyme immunoassay.

The Triage parasite panel (BIOSITE Diagnostics, San Diego, Calif.) is a new qualitative enzyme immunoassay (EIA) panel for the detection of Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar, and Cryptosporidium parvum in fresh or fresh, frozen, unfixed human fecal specimens. By using specific antibodies, antigens specific for these organisms are captured and immobilized on a membrane. Panel perf...

Prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium spp. in Libya: 2000–2015

Introduction The intestinal protozoa Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium spp. are the causative agents of giardiasis, amebiasis, and cryptosporidiosis, respectively. Adequate knowledge of the geographical distribution of parasites and the demographic variables that influence their prevalence is important for effective control of infection in at-risk populations. Methods ...

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium parvum/hominis, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia among Young Children with and without Diarrhea in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

BACKGROUND Although enteroparasites are common causes of diarrheal illness, few studies have been performed among children in Tanzania. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium parvum/hominis, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia among young children in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and identify risk factors for infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We performed a...

Prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia infection in a Rural Area of Haryana, India

An intestinal parasitic infestation is major public health problem in the world. It is estimated that 3.5 billion people are involved globally and 450 millions are suffering as a result of these infections, majority being children (WHO, 2000). The most important protozoan parasites are the Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia. Giardia lamblia (syn G. intestinalis, G.duodenalis) is one of t...
