Nonlinear Diffraction of Water Waves by Offshore Structures

in cylindrical polar coordinates is derived. This is followed by a review of the current knowledge on analytical theories and numerical treatments of nonlinear diffraction of water waves by offshore cylindrical structures. A brief discussion is made on water waves incident on a circular harbor with a narrow gap. Special emphasis is given to the resonance phenomenon associated with this problem....

Solitary gravity water waves with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity

This paper presents an existence theory for small-amplitude solitary-wave solutions to the classical water-wave problem in the absence of surface tension and with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity. The hydrodynamic problem is formulated as an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system in which the horizontal spatial direction is the time-like variable. A centre-manifold reduction technique is...

Diffraction of ocean waves around a hollow cylindrical shell structure

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in problems of diffraction and radiation of ocean waves around structures, in relation to “green” power generation by Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. In this paper we present a first-order analytical solution for the diffraction of ocean waves around a hollow cylindrical shell structure suspended in an ocean of finite depth. By revisiting...

Fixed Parameter Tractable Alignment of RNA Structures Including Arbitrary Pseudoknots

We present an algorithm for computing the edit distance of two RNA structures with arbitrary kinds of pseudoknots. A main benefit of the algorithm is that, despite the problem is NP-hard, the algorithmic complexity adapts to the complexity of the RNA structures. Due to fixed parameter tractability, we can guarantee polynomial run-time for a parameter which is small in practice. Our algorithm ca...
