Different aspects of Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) medicinal plant: A review
author
Abstract:
Background & Aim: Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) is a medicinal plant of Asteraceae. This plant is native to the southern Mediterranean and North Africa, and today it is cultivated in many parts of the world for medicinal and nutritional purposes. Capitols are the edible part of the plant and its leaves are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Artichoke has a special place in the pharmaceutical and traditional medicine industry due to its various polyphenols and flavonoids, with an important pharmaceutical and antioxidant effect. Artichokes leaf has anti-oxidative, antibacterial, choleretic and diuretic. In addition, artichoke extract reduces cholesterol and lipids due to the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Chlorogenic acid and cynarin are the major components of the plant and the medicinal properties are mainly related to them. The present study addresses the different aspects of this plant. Industrial/ Practical recommendations: Considerable amounts of different phytochemicals can be found in Artichoke which make it suitable for herbal remedies. More studies about the other useful and unknown properties of this multipurpose plant are essential.

Inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis in primary cultured rat hepatocytes by artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) extracts.
High-dose aqueous extracts from artichoke leaves were found to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis from 14C-acetate in primary cultured rat hepatocytes in a concentration-dependent biphasic manner with moderate inhibition (approximately 20%) between 0.007 and 0.1 mg/ml and more strong inhibition at 1 mg/ml. Cytotoxic effects detected by lactate dehydrogenase leakage and the 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol...
full textPhenolic Compounds from Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) By- products and their Antimicrobial Activities
Cynara scolymus L. is a medicinal plant frequently used in traditional medicine for liver diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the different parts of Artichoke. Maximum antimicrobial activity was observed with methanolic extract of bound phenols for (bract and heart) against Gram negative bacteria. The MIC values for bound phenols from heart were (63μg/ml...

In this study, the quantitative amounts of chlorogenic acid (CA) in spray dried artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) leaf extract (SD) and standardized artichoke commercial products (CP1, CP2) were calculated by using HPLC. The amounts of CA were 4.66±2.96x10 mg/capsule and 27.9±9.98x10 mg/capsule for CP1 and CP2 respectively. The in vitro phytoequivalance of SD, CP1 and CP2 were evaluated by using t...
full textSensory evaluation of biscuits enriched with artichoke fiber‐rich powders (Cynara scolymus L.)
The artichoke by-products from the canning industry are mainly used for silage, being minimally revaluated. The ways of extraction of by-products of artichoke into fiber-rich powders modify their industrial applications in biscuits, as the sensory evaluation may change compared with the reference fiber (Pea fiber, P) used with commercial biscuit. In this sensory study biscuits enriched with fib...
full textThe influence of supplementation with artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) extract on selected redox parameters in rowers.
High-intensity physical exercise decreases intracellular antioxidant potential. An enhanced antioxidant defense system is desirable in people subjected to exhaustive exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of supplementation with artichoke-leaf extract on parameters describing balance between oxidants and antioxidants in competitive rowers. This double-blinded study was...
