Developing Emotion-Oriented Morality through Fiction
author
Abstract:
Background: As a peculiar epistemological procedure to understand and represent world facts, literature has constantly imparted major contributions to human knowledge. Literature’s epistemological effects bear on both cognitive and affective measures; however, its emotional functioning is more remarkable. Fiction resorts to mimesis on readers’ mind in developing such moral emotions as empathy, sympathy and compassion in order to build up an emotional balance through discharging adverse emotions. The educational consequences of fiction are in line with affective approach to ethics, according to which avoiding the break between moral judgment and moral act relies on the emotional perception of self and others’ feelings and beliefs, as well as the nature of intergroup social relations. Moral behavior grounded on emotive knowledge is called emotional-oriented morality in this article, which attempts to explain the role of emotions in directing people toward moral virtue and to assess the epistemological effects of fiction in that regard. Conclusion: The effective involvement of fiction as a tool for moral goodness, in a cultural setting demands psychological and sociological scrutiny. Children’s literature and translated literature are two critical areas of effect due to their acute emotive impacts on readers. Provided that the cultural qualities of the affective system dominating the target community are taken into account, fiction can play a significant role in the development of emotion-oriented morality by building a rich and balanced repertoire of familiar and common emotion on the one hand, and complex and emergent emotions on the other.

Morality: Fact or Fiction?
One cannot give too many or too frequent warnings against this laxity, or even mean cast of mind, which seeks its principle among empirical motives and laws; for, human reason in its weariness gladly rests on this pillow and in a dream of sweet illusions (which allow it to embrace a cloud instead of Juno) it substitutes for a morality a bastard patched up from limbs of quite diverse ancestry, w...
full textDeveloping a Consistent View on Emotion-Oriented Computing
The network of excellence HUMAINE is currently making a co-ordinated, interdisciplinary effort to develop a consistent view on emotion-oriented computing. This overview paper proposes a “map” of the research area, distinguishing core technologies from applicationoriented and psychologically oriented work. First results from the ongoing research in the thematic workpackages are reported.
full textDeveloping ubiquitous applications through service-oriented abstractions
Many infrastructural elements required to make pervasive computing a reality are now in place: some have been tested in the labs, while others are already commercially available. However, the integration of these elements to create ubiquitous applications is still a daunting task, as the developers have to delve into the low-level details of each of them. With this in mind, we present UbiSOA, a...
full textEmotion and Morality: A Tasting Menu
In recent years, moral psychology has undergone a renaissance characterized by two dramatic changes (Haidt, 2007). First, the scientific study of morality has become a broad, interdisciplinary enterprise, drawing on insights and methods from philosophy, neuroscience, economics, anthropology, biology, and all quarters of psychology. Second, emotion now plays a central role in moral psychology re...

Aspect-oriented programming represents a –if not the most– promising approach to improve the software development process. It seems particularly appropriate when application requirements that seem wellseparated require software behaviour that crosscuts the basic decomposition of the application. The domain of software security is an excellent example of a real-world concern requiring a sophisti...
