Determining suitable time for exploitation/ grazing of rangeland plants using growing degree days (GDD) model

Authors

Abstract:

One of the key principles in rangeland management is determination of suitable times for exploitation and grazing of rangeland plants in summer and winter pasturelands. This determination of time not only prevents degradation of plant species, but also leads to optimal usage of plant yield. Multiple factors affect plant phenology among which temperature regime has the highest effect on plant development and consequently exploitation and grazing of the plant. In this study, we used growing degree days (GDD) model to assess the phenology of three key rangeland plants: Artemisia sieberi, Halocnemum strobilaceium and Poa bulbosa. Initially, rangeland types were identified and determined in each region, then phenology stage, plant height, cumulative temperature, soil moisture and precipitation were measured and collected. To pick the phenology stage data, 10 individuals were selected from each species in each region and field visits started from the early March. Result showed that the start and end of phenology periods were different between key plants in each region within different years. Plant phenology was affected by climatic condition particularly temperature and precipitation. According to the result, the beginning of vegetative period for A. sieberi and H. strobilaceium was from mid-March to the end of March and the beginning of the vegetative period for P. bulbosa was late-December. This variation in plants phenology lied behind the variation of average monthly temperature in different years. The result of current study is applicable in adjustment of exploitation and grazing periods from plant species in different regions as well as adjustment of pastoral calendar.

Determining Rangeland Suitability for Sheep Grazing Using GIS (Case Study: Sadegh Abad Watershed, Kermanshah Province, Iran)

Abstract. Rangelands are mainly used for grazing the livestock in Iran, it is essential to specify grazing suitability of rangelands in each region of country, so that it may improve the management policies and approaches for planning and designing current and future plans. The aim of this research was to determine the rangeland suitability for sheep grazing in the watershed of Sadegh Abad, Ker...

GIS-based analysis of spatial distribution patterns of growing degree-days for agricultural applications in Iran

The geographical distribution of growing degree-days (GDDs) within Iran was studied using GIS-based maps. GDDs were calculated using daily thermal parameters (daily maximum and minimum air temperature). Based on the purpose of the study and climatic conditions of Iran, the average value of 5?C was chosen for GDD calculation. The calculations were carried out using daily weather data of 113 mete...

Determining Forage Intake of Nursing Calves Grazing Native Sandhills Rangeland

The objective of this study was to determine nursing calf forage intake prior to weaning in the Nebraska Sandhills range. Eight crossbred cow-calf pairs in year one and 12 pairs in year two were selected for each trial. Pairs were randomly assigned to one of two rotation groups, pasture (Graze) or individual fed dry lot pens for each pair (Pen). Pen pairs were fed harvested meadow hay of simila...

Required Growing Degree-Days (GDDs) for each Phenological Stage of Fritillaria imperialis

Studying plant phenology is very important to regulate the rangeland utilization. Plant phenology can be determined by Growing Degree Days (GDDs). Since temperature varies yearly, the phenological stages may consequently differ yearly. Determining the base temperature is one of the key steps in the calculation of GDDs. The aim of this study was to calculate the required GDDs for each phenologic...

Growing degree-days: one equation, two interpretations

Heat units, expressed in growing degree-days (GDD), are frequently used to describe the timing of biological processes. The basic equation used is GDD = [(T,,, + TM,,)/2] T,,,,, where T, and T,,, are daily maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively, and T,, is the base temperature. Two methods of interpreting this equation for calculating GDD are: (1) if the daily mean temperature is les...
