Determining Land Units Contributions to Suspended Sediment Yield Using Sediment Fingerprinting Method (Case Study: Tull Bane Basin, Golestan Province)
Authors
Abstract:
Fingerprint method is one of the new methods to determine the contribution of suspended sediment in the land units. In this method, a suitable composite (set) of diagnostic properties and a multivariate mixing model are employed to estimate the relative contribution of sediment sources to sediments transported to watershed outlet. This research carried out in the Tull Bane watershed with 3278.91ha area, located in the south of Gorgan, Golestan province. This watershed with 14709.97 ton/year sediment yield is one of the most critical watersheds in the province. XRF experiments were used in this study and the 17 compounds were used as tracer. The watershed divided into five land units as well as the main river was divided into three sections. Three samples were taken from each land unit. Samples with two samples of the sediment samples at various watershed outlets as well as a combination of two sediment samples were compared. Test results were analyzed by factor analysis and discriminant analysis. Compounds CaO, SiO2, Rb2O and X2 were considered as tracer. Results showed bank river No. 5 has maximum share in suspended sediment with 19.54 percent. The fingerprinting approach to source ascription is appeared as providing valuable information regarding suspended sediment sources in the study catchments.

Determining Suitable Fingerprinting Properties for Discrimination of Sediment Sources (Case study: Amrovan and Atary Catchments)
This contribution determines suitable fingerprinting properties for sediment source discrimination within theAmrovan and Atary catchments in Semnan Province, Iran. These catchments are representative of a range of geology formations and should therefore provide a meaningful basis for a general assessment of the degree of sediment source discrimination afforded by a range of fingerprint properti...
full textThe most Appropriate Statistical Method for Suspended Sediment Estimation of Rivers (Case Study: Roodak Station of the Jajrood Basin)
The sediment load that is transported by rivers can create numerous problems such as sedimentation in the reservoir and storage capacity reduction, developed load in the rivers, destruction of structures along the river and transfer of pollution. Therefore, an accurate estimate of the sediment load in rivers is absolutely essential for river engineering, reservoir design, sediment transportatio...
full textSediment fingerprinting to determine the source of suspended sediment in a southern Piedmont stream.
Thousands of stream miles in the southern Piedmont region are impaired because of high levels of suspended sediment. It is unclear if the source is upland erosion from agricultural sources or bank erosion of historic sediment deposited in the flood plains between 1830 and 1930 when cotton farming was extensive. The objective of this study was to determine the source of high stream suspended sed...
full textEstimating of erosion and sediment yield of Gorganrud basin using erosin potential method
Soil erosion can be considered as one of the most important obstacles in the way of sustainable development of agriculture and natural resources. The aim of this study is to estimate erosion and sediment yield of basin using Erosion Potential Method, in Gorganrud basin, north of Iran. The main factors in the EPM (slope average percent, erosion, rock and soil resistance, and land-use) were evalu...
full textinvestigation of sediment sources of drainage basin by fingerprinting method
due to successes of fingerprinting method in producing rapid and low-cost information of sediment sources, in this research this method was used in three sub-cathments of chasht-khoran basin in semnan province: amrovan, atari and ali-abad. samples below 63 μm were separated and 15 fingerprinting propertis was measured. in the first stage comparison of means and differentiation analysis were use...
full textSediment provenance in the Shudu Lake basin, northwest Yunnan Province, China, as revealed by composite fingerprinting
Composite fingerprinting represents an effective method of reconstructing sediment-source changes in remote areas where long-term hydrological and sediment accretion records do not exist. A ca. 50-year record of sediment deposition was determined for a small catchment at Shudu, situated in northwest Yunnan Province, China. Woodland, pasture, shrubland and channel bank material are identified as...
