Detection of Sesquiterpene Lactones in Ten Artemisia Species Population of Khorasan Provinces
Authors
Abstract:
Objective During the last three decades sesquiterpenoid lactones have emerged as one of the largest groups of plant products with over 3000 naturally occurring substances known. The genus Artemisia characteristically contains this biologically active type of secondary metabolites. With respect to increasing interest in the cytotoxic, antibiotic, phototoxic and antineoplastic activities of sesquiterpene lactones, identification of these compounds in Khorasanian Artemisia species, that some of them are endemic to Iran, can be worth while. Materials and Methods Ten species of Artemisia were collected from different parts of Khorasan Provinces of Iran. IR spectra recorded as KBr disks and in CH2Cl2 on a Unicam dp 110 spectrometer (UK). 1H-NMR (500 MHz) spectra were measured in CDCl3 using a Bruker DRX 500 spectrometer. Number of scans was 32 for all of the samples. The Herz-Högenauer technique was applied for preparation of the terpenoid extracts. Results Our findings revealed that A. absinthium, A. ciniformis, A. fragrans, A. khorassanica, A. kopetdaghensis, A. santolina and A. sieberi had a high amount of sesquiterpene lactones. A little or no sesquiterpene lactone had been detected in other species. Differentiation of saturated and unsaturated sesquiterpene lactones was one of the advantages of 1H-NMR application in this method. Conclusion Many of tested Khorasanian Artemisia species contained high amounts of sesquiterpene lactones

full textAntiulcerogenic activity of some sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Artemisia annua.
Artemisinin 1, dihydro-epideoxyarteannuin B 2 and deoxyartemisinin 3 were isolated from the sequiterpene lactone-enriched fraction obtained from the crude ethanolic extract of Artemisia annua L. These compounds were tested on ethanol and indomethacin-induced ulcer models. Compound 1 did not afford cytoprotection under the experimental models tested. Only compounds 2 and 3 decreased the ulcerati...
full textArtemisia annua L.: evidence of sesquiterpene lactones’ fraction antinociceptive activity
BACKGROUND Artemisia annua L. has been used for many centuries in Chinese traditional medicine. Artemisinin, the active principle was first isolated and identified in the 1970s becoming the global back bone to the fight against malaria. Our research group previously developed an economic and ecological friendly process to obtain this compound. In the pursuit to also exploit the residue generate...
full textSesquiterpene Lactones from Artemisia Genus: Biological Activities and Methods of Analysis
Sesquiterpene lactones are a large group of natural compounds, found primarily in plants of Asteraceae family, with over 5000 structures reported to date. Within this family, genus Artemisia is very well represented, having approximately 500 species characterized by the presence of eudesmanolides and guaianolides, especially highly oxygenated ones, and rarely of germacranolides. Sesquiterpene l...
full textSesquiterpene Lactones from Achillea
The species of genus Achillea, particularly those belonging to the Achillea millefolium group have received a lot of attention so far, due to their use in traditional medicine. Among the numerous chemical compounds isolated from the A. millefolium species, the sesquiterpene lactones are usually one of the major constituents (Seaman, 1982). Continuing our chemotaxonomic examination of Bulgarian ...
full textFlavonoids and Sesquiterpene Lactones from Artemisia absinthium and Tanacetum parthenium against Schistosoma mansoni Worms
Human schistosomiasis, caused by trematode worms of the genus Schistosoma, is one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases, affecting more than 200 million individuals worldwide and praziquantel is the only available drug to treat this disease. Artemisia absinthium L. and Tanacetum parthenium L. are species popularly used as anthelmintics. We investigated the in vitro schistosomicida...
