Detection of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis by PCR in Fasa district in 2012
Authors
Abstract:
Background & Objective: Leishmaniasis is a common disease between humans and animals caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania spp. It is transmitted by the female species of Phlebotomus. The most common form of leishmaniasis is the cutaneous form seen as either dry (urban) or wet (Rural). Detection of cutaneous leishmaniasis species is not reliable by microscopy. Among the methods, PCR is useful for this purpose. In this study, we aimed to investigate the cutaneous leishmaniasis species by PCR method in Fasa district. Material & Methods: Slit biopsies were collected from 138 suspected cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis who were presented, consecutively, in Fasa district from April 2011 to February 2012. After the microscopy, the entire smear was then scraped off the slide surface for DNA extraction and PCR assay. Results: All 138 investigated smears were reported positive by microscopy and nested PCR assay. In PCR, One of the smears had the 750-bp band, indicative of L. tropica and the rest had the 560-bp band indicative of L. major. Conclusion: In conclusion, the cutaneous leishmaniasis found in Fasa district is predominantly Rural Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. The PCR-based assay used in the present study appears to be a suitable and powerful tool for the characterization of Leishmanial species.

Determination of Reservoir(s) and Vector(s) of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis by Nested-PCR in Marvdasht District, Fars Province, Southern Iran
Introduction: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an increasing public health problem in several parts of Iran. In southern parts, the incidence of CL has been doubled over the last decade. This epidemiological study was done for determination of reservoir(s) and vector(s) of cutaneous leishmaniasis in rural regions of Marvdasht, Fars province, southern Iran during 2003 and 2004. Methods: A total of...

Determination of Leishmania species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in Mashhad by PCR-RFLP method
Three species of L. tropica, L. major and L. infantum are known as main causal agents of leishmaniasis have been reported in Iran. Since cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in North East of Iran, in the present work, 50 Leishmania positive isolates from human cases in Mashhad (Center of Razavi province, North East of Iran), were genotyped by means of polymerase chain reaction-restriction f...
full textDetection of Drug Resistance Gene in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis by PCR in Some Endemic Areas of Iran
BACKGROUND Cutaneous leishmaniasis is still a health problem in many rural and urban regions of Iran and drug resistance has emerged as a major impediment in the treatment of leishmaniasis. This study aims to determine the drug resistance gene in cutaneous leishmaniasis by PCR in some endemic areas of Iran. METHODS Ninety seven samples were collected from ulcers of leishmaniasis patients from...
