Dental anxiety: Predictive role of cognitive-attentional syndrome, mental pain, and interoceptive awareness
Authors
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to predict dental anxiety based on cognitive-attentional syndrome, mental pain, and interoceptive awareness. This study was descriptive research with a correlational design. The statistical population was all adults visiting private practice offices in District 4 of Tehran, Iran (1399). The sample consisted of 213 clients who were selected using convenience sampling. The Cognitive-Attentional Syndrome Questionnaire CAS-1 (Wells, 2009), the Mental Pain Scale MPS (Orbach and Mikulincer, 2003), the Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness Scale IAQ) Mehling, 2012) and dental anxiety Questionnaire DAQ (Corah, 1996) were used to collect data. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze data. Results of data analysis showed that cognitive-attentional syndrome (0.14), mental pain (0.40), and interoceptive awareness (-0.21) could predict 33% of dental anxiety in clients (p=0.01). The findings of this study confirmed the role of cognitive-attentional syndrome and mental pain is increasing and the role of interoceptive awareness in reducing dental anxiety, and they could be used to develop therapeutic or preventive interventions for dental anxiety.

Diminished Interoceptive Awareness in Fibromyalgia Syndrome.
Sensitivity to signals arising within the body (interoceptive awareness) has been implicated in emotion processing; interindividual differences in interoceptive awareness modulate both subjective and physiological indicators of emotional experience and the regulation of emotion-related behaviors. This study investigated interoceptive awareness in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), a chr...
full textAnxiety and cognitive performance: attentional control theory.
Attentional control theory is an approach to anxiety and cognition representing a major development of Eysenck and Calvo's (1992) processing efficiency theory. It is assumed that anxiety impairs efficient functioning of the goal-directed attentional system and increases the extent to which processing is influenced by the stimulus-driven attentional system. In addition to decreasing attentional ...
full textThe role of athletes' pain-related anxiety in pain-related attentional processes.
Numerous researchers have highlighted the social determinants of athletes' attitude toward pain, yet little is known about the role of cognitive processes and emotions that are related to pain in sport endeavors. There is evidence, in a dot probe paradigm, that individuals with chronic pain selectively orient their attention toward pain-related stimuli, but no studies have differentiated betwee...
full textDental anxiety and pain related to ART
UNLABELLED Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is considered to be well accepted, both by children and by adult patients. The objective of this review is to present and discuss the evidence regarding the acceptability of ART, from the patient's perspective. Aspects related to dental anxiety/fear and pain/discomfort have been highlighted, to facilitate better understanding and use of the info...
full textKnowing your own heart: Distinguishing interoceptive accuracy from interoceptive awareness
Interoception refers to the sensing of internal bodily changes. Interoception interacts with cognition and emotion, making measurement of individual differences in interoceptive ability broadly relevant to neuropsychology. However, inconsistency in how interoception is defined and quantified led to a three-dimensional model. Here, we provide empirical support for dissociation between dimensions...
full textEffect of Awareness and Reassurance on Anxiety of Dental Implant Candidates
Objectives: Dental anxiety can be potentially problematic. Anxiety must be controlled in highly anxious patients in order to ensure a smooth procedure and prevent potential complications. Awareness and reassurance are believed to be efficient for anxiety control in patients undergoing dental procedures especially dental implant treatment. This study sought to assess the effect of aware...
