CYTOKINE AND GROWTH FACTOR MODULATION OF CELL CYCLE EVENTS IN HUMAN MELANOMA CELL LINES
Authors
Abstract:
Cytokines influence cell cycle events, which in some but not all instances can be associated with melanoma progression. Analysis of the G0/G 1 and S phase fractions of the cell cycle was used to assay the proliferative or inhibitory activity of cytokines against ten human melanoma cell lines, including pairs of cell lines derived from primary and metastatic tissue of individual patients. Cytokines and growth factors were generally capable of inducing either a proliferative or an inhibitory effect, depending upon the melanoma cell line tested. Distinct differences in responsiveness between the primary and metastatic partners of related pairs of melanoma cell lines was observed for IL-l β, IL-6, TNFα, TGFβ2, IFNα, IFNyand IGF-2. This data is complementary to previous works1.2 showing IL-6 and TGFβ2 to be inhibitory to.cell lines derived from early, but not advanced-stage melanomas. These alterations in cell cycle events were coincidental with a reduced expression of lCAM-1 and/or MHC antigen expression in response to some of these cytokines.

full textEffects of berberine on proliferation, cell cycle distribution and apoptosis of human breast cancer T47D and MCF7 cell lines
Objective(s):Berberine, a naturally occurring isoquinoline alkaloid, has shown antitumor properties in some in vitro systems. But the effect of berberine on breast cancer has not yet been completely studied. In this study, we evaluated anticancer properties of berberine in comparison to doxorubicin. Materials and Methods: The antiproliferative effects of berberine and doxorubicin alone and in ...
full text[Cell cycle arrest induced by epidermal growth factor on human squamous cell carcinoma cell lines].
Although human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell lines frequently contain an elevated number of epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor accompanied with amplification of EGF receptor/c-erbB gene, it is well known that EGF inhibits the growth of these cells in culture at doses that stimulate the growth of epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts. To study this growth inhibitory effect of E...
full textBiomarkers in Human Prostate Carcinoma Cell Lines Selenium Modulation of Cell Proliferation and Cell Cycle
Prostate cancer (PCA) is the most common histological malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among North American men. There has been considerable interest in the chemopreventative properties of selenium. In this study, we assessed whether selenium inhibits cell growth and associated cell cycle regulatory proteins. Human PCA cells (LNCaP, PC3, PC3-AR2, and PC3-M) were incubate...
