Curcumin as an Environmental Potent Antioxidant Decreases Risk of Arthrosclerosis
Authors
Abstract:
Background & Aims of the Study: Oxidative stress increases platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) gene expression in endothelial cells that contributes to vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress generates by dys-regulated redox balance between ROS producing systems and antioxidant systems. Also, Curcumin (Cur) as a main part of turmeric has anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer and antitumor effects. This study was conducted to test the Curcumin as an environmental potent antioxidant decreases risk of arthrosclerosis. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted during 2015 in Iran. Cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells were incubated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (20, 40 and 80 µM) and Curcumin (10 µM) for 24h. Then, the level of PDGF gene expression was analyzed by Real-Time PCR in untreated and treated cells. Results: The results demonstrated significant increase in the level of PDGF gene expression in H2O2 treated groups versus control. Also, treated groups with H2O2 -Curcumin showed notable decrease in the level of PDGF gene expression compared with H2O2 treated groups. Conclusion: Our results support valuable data about the application of Curcumin for protection against atherosclerosis.

full textNovel curcumin derivatives as potent inhibitors of amyloid β aggregation
Modulation of abnormal amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation is considered to be a potential therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent in vitro and in vivo experiments suggest that inhibition of Aβ aggregation by curcumin would exert favorable effects for preventing or treating AD. We have previously synthesized a series of novel curcumin derivatives. In this study, we investigated the effec...
full textBacterial persistence increases as environmental fitness decreases
Since persister cells cause chronic infections and since Escherichia coli toxin MqsR increases persisters, we used protein engineering to increase the toxicity of MqsR to gain insights into persister cell formation. Through two amino acid replacements that increased the stability of MqsR, toxicity and persistence were increased. A whole-transcriptome study revealed that the MqsR variant increas...
full textConfrontation With Scorpions As an Environmental Permanent Risk in Iran: A Review
Background & Aims of the Study: Among the Iranians, scorpion is considered as one of the most important natural hazards and introduced as a dangerous animal. The outcome of this confrontation is to create stories and different beliefs about them .The primary aim of this study is to investigate and deliberate on the validity and fraudulence of these beliefs in how Iranian looked...
full textStudy of coumarin-resveratrol hybrids as potent antioxidant compounds.
In the present work we synthesized a selected series of hydroxylated 3-phenylcoumarins 5-8, with the aim of evaluating in detail their antioxidant properties. From an in depth study of the antioxidant capacity data (ORAC-FL, ESR, CV and ROS inhibition) it was concluded that these derivatives are very good antioxidants, with very interesting profiles in all the performed assays. The study of the...

therosclerosis is increasing among Japanese because of their changing lifestyle.1 Carotid ultrasound examination is a good non-invasive method of detecting atherosclerosis by measuring the intima–media thickness (IMT),2 plaque number (PN) and plaque score (PS).3 Atherosclerosis of the carotid artery is related with not only coronary artery disease (CAD),4,5 but also systemic atherosclerosis. Ho...
