Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Infertility is one of the disorders, which its prevalence is increasing and several factors associated with reduction of sperm quality, can play an important role in this disorder. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between dietary antioxidants intake and sperm quality in infertile men with oligozoospermia.   Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 175 infertile men with oligozoospermia in Isfahan Infertility Center in 2018. In this study, a food frequency questionnaire with confirmed validity, was used to assess dietary intake. Sperm sample was collected with 3-day abstinence of sex, and two samples were taken for more assurance. Sperm parameters (concentration, motility, count, and morphology), were evaluated according to WHO standards. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between each antioxidant and sperm quality parameters. Dara were analyzed using linear regression and covariance analysis.   Results: In this study, the mean age of the subjects was 32.19 years. The mean weight and body mass index of the individuals, were 85.28kg and 26.87kg/m2. There was a significant reverse correlation between beta-carotene and vitamin C intake with DFI. Also, there was a significant correlation between the intake of lutein and beta-cryptoxanthine with the count and concentration of sperm.   Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicated an inverse correlation between some of the antioxidants and related sperm parameters. Therefore, broader research with a higher target community, is required for further investigation.

The effect of rhFSH on Sperm DNA Fragmentation and sperm parameters in Oligozoospermia Infertile Men

Background: One of the main causes of male infertility is the negative effects of oxidative stress. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) plays an essential role in spermatogenesis, as well as in the maintenance of sperm DNA integrity. This study aimed to determine whether the recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (rhFSH) treatment of sperm parameters could positively affect sperm DNA and...

The association between dietary antioxidant intake and semen quality in infertile men

Background: Oxidative stress is detrimental to semen quality and has a significant role in the etiology of male subfertility. Methods: Dietary intake of antioxidants were compared between thirty two men with oligolastheno/ teratazoospermic (cases) and 32 normospermic volunteers (controls) attending fertility clinic in Mirza Koochak-khan Hospital in Tehran, Iran. All participants were...

Correlation between sperm parameters and sperm DNA fragmentation in fertile and infertile men

Background: It is established that sperm DNA integrity is essential in fertilization and normal embryo and fetal development. Routine semen analysis gives an approximate evaluation of the functional competence of spermatozoa, but does not always reflect the quality of sperm DNA. Therefore, the evaluation of sperm DNA integrity, in addition to routine sperm parameters, could add further informat...

Correlation between serum lipids profile with sperm parameters of infertile men with abnormal semen analysis

Background: One of the main laboratory tests for evaluation of infertility is semen analysis (SA). However, additional tests may be suggested for further diagnosis of male fertility potentials. The seminal fluid contains sperms, non-sperm cells, and various types of lipids and glucose. Objective: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to correlate the sperm parameters with concentratio...
