Compton scattering as a probe for materials investigation

author

Abstract:

This article investigates into the feasibility of using gamma radiation Compton backscatter spectra as a means of material characterization, with the view to developing a portable, hand held probe for investigative purposes such as searching for illicit substances hidden in wall or car door cavities.

Theories of Compton Scattering by Magnetic Materials *

Radiat ion scattering experiments on magnetic materials cont inue to provide new and exciting science. Recent examples include polar izat ion and resonance studies of x-ray magnet ic scattering in rare-earth metals [1] and white-beam nonresonant diffraction of synchrot ron radia t ion f rom ferromagnet ic iron [2]. Mater ia l propert ies probed in such experiments are weak s t ructural modula t...

High-resolution Compton Scattering as a Probe of Fermiology and Electron Correlation Effects

Compton scattering is one of the few spectroscopies which directly probes the ground state momentum density in materials. Recent progress in synchrotron light sources has brought a renewed interest in the technique as a tool for investigating fermiology related issues on the one hand, and as a unique window on hitherto inaccessible correlation effects in the electron gas on the other. We provid...

Compton Scattering

In the early 20th century, research into the interaction of X-rays with matter was an emerging field. It was observed that when a beam of X-rays is directed at an atom, an electron is ejected and the light is scattered through an angle θ, as illustrated below. Classical electromagnetism predicts that the wavelength of scattered rays should be equal to the initial wavelength; however, experiment...

A New Kinetic Equation for Compton Scattering

A kinetic equation for Compton scattering is given that differs from the Kompaneets equation in several significant ways. By using an inverse differential operator this equation allows treatment of problems for which the radiation field varies rapidly on the scale of the width of the Compton kernel. This inverse operator method describes, among other effects, the thermal Doppler broadening of s...

High Resolution Compton Scattering as a Probe of the Fermi Surface in the Iron-based Superconductor LaO1−xFxFeAs

We have carried out first-principles all-electron calculations of the (001)-projected 2D electron momentum density and the directional Compton profiles along the [100], [001] and [110] directions in the Fe-based superconductor LaOFeAs within the framework of the local density approximation. We identify Fermi surface features in the 2D electron momentum density and the directional Compton profil...

Deeply-virtual Compton Scattering

We study in QCD the physics of deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)—the virtual Compton process in the large s and small t kinematic region. We show that DVCS can probe a new type of off-forward parton distributions. We derive an Altarelli-Parisi type of evolution equations for these distributions. We also derive their sum rules in terms of nucleon form-factors of the twist-two quark and gl...
