Abstract:

Background and Aim: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary disease that affects ectodermal tissues. Its oral manifestations include hypodontia or oligodontia, which cause the reduction of the height and width of the alveolar ridge. Considering numerous difficulties that these patients encounter with regard to facial appearance, talking, and chewing, their rehabilitation has a major influence on their quality of life. Implantation therapy is considered as a successful therapeutic protocol for substitution of such teeth. This article is a review of implant rehabilitation of ED patients and the related management procedures. Materials and Methods: In the present review article, the English articles in PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases from January 2000 to December 2017 have been investigated using the following keywords: anodontia, dental implants, ectodermal dysplasia, and hypodontia.  Conclusion: There is a multilateral approach to the treatment of ED patients according to their age, the status of oral soft and hard tissues and the remaining teeth. Implantation therapy for such patients is similar to that of non-ED patients.

Long-term results of implant-based functional rehabilitation of patients with ectodermal dysplasia

Functional dental rehabilitation of patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) still remains a challenge due to severe hypodontia and underdeveloped alveolar ridges that often preclude implant placement without surgical augmentation. Only few data about technique and timing of augmentation and implant placement can be found in the literature. We have established a surgical algorithm as part of a f...

Dental Implant Patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia: Current Approaches

In cases of ectodermal dysplasia (ED); anodontia, hypodontia, conic teeth, underdeveloped crests, vertical size loss and presence of cleft lip and palate may occur due to developmental defects in ectoderm-origin organs and tissues. In such patients, alternative rehabilitation methods are required because of insufficient areas for denture retention. Dental implants are one of the alternative met...

Oral rehabilitation with implant-supported overdenture in a child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia

suffering from severe hypodontia, however, conventional prostheses are inadequate due to lack of retention and instability. The replacement of teeth by implants is usually restricted to patients with completed craniofacial growth; however, implants can be used as abutments for overdentures. This study reports a 9-year follow-up case of a child affected with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysp...
