Compensatory growth, proximate composition and amino acid contents after experiencing cycles of feed deprivation and re-feeding in young yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco R.)
Authors
Abstract:
The compensatory growth, proximate composition and amino acid contents changes of young yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco R.) (1.63-1.69 g) had been investigated using a 45-day cyclic feed deprivation and re-feeding experiment. The control group (S0) was fed daily with live tubificid worms (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri), while the S1/4, S1/2, and S1/1 groups cyclically experienced one-day of feed deprivation followed by four, two or one day(s) of feeding, respectively. Over- or full-compensatory growth was achieved in the cyclic deprivation/re-feeding groups through increased feeding rate (FR) and feed conversion efficiency (FCE). However, the fish behaved different courses of growth compensation, the compensatory growth responses of fish subjected to a weaker intensity of feed deprivation (i.e., S1/4) compared with more intense deprivation (i.e., S1/1) was achieved in these groups mainly by a gradual increases in FR or by maintaining a high FCE, respectively. The cyclic deprivation/re-feeding schedules did not affect the proximate composition of the fish body, however, the amino acid parameters were inversely related to the specific growth rate, the fish showing growth over-compensation contained significantly lower contents of total amino acids, essential and non-essential amino acids.

Effect of probiotic (Bacilact) on growth performance, feed restriction and compensatory growth after re-feeding in rainbow trout
This study was carried with aim to investigate the restriction of feed, compensatory growth and the effect of probiotic (Bacilact) on growth performance, food productivity, survival and carcass composition of rainbow trout. Experiment was performed using a completely randomized design with three treatments consist of without hungry and basilicate treatment, feed restriction treatments with and ...
full textDietary Available Phosphorus Affected Growth Performance, Body Composition, and Hepatic Antioxidant Property of Juvenile Yellow Catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco
An 8-week feeding trial was carried out with juvenile yellow catfish to study the effects of dietary available phosphorus (P) on growth performance, body composition, and hepatic antioxidant property. Six pellet diets were formulated to contain graded available P levels at 0.33, 0.56, 0.81, 1.15, 1.31, and 1.57% of dry matter, respectively. Triplicate tanks with each tank containing 60 juvenile...
full textA Comparative Transcriptome Analysis between Wild and Albino Yellow Catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco)
Body colours are important and striking features for individual survival and reproductive success, in particular in vertebrates where mating behaviour and mate preference may be strongly influenced by non-normal phenotypes. Pigmentation disorders may be generated by disruption of one or many independent genes as well as by environmental factors. The first discovery of albino yellow catfish (Pel...
full textHeritable Targeted Inactivation of Myostatin Gene in Yellow Catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) Using Engineered Zinc Finger Nucleases
Yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) is one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. However, its small size and lower meat yield limit its edible value. Myostatin (MSTN) is a negative regulator of mammalian muscle growth. But, the function of Mstn in fish remains elusive. To explore roles of mstn gene in fish growth and create a strain of yellow catfish with high amou...
full textResearch Article: Effect of feeding level on water quality and plankton community structure in the yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) rearing enclosure ecosystem
Four feeding levels (40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of satiation) were designed as the different treatment groups to assess its effects on water quality and plankton community structure in the yellow catfish rearing enclosure ecosystem. The results showed that the weight gain and specific growth rate decreased significantly as the feeding level decreased. The soluble nutrients (except for NO2-N) concen...
