Abstract:

Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.  Materials and Methods: In this prospective analytic study, 73 patients (mean age, 39.63±12.94 years) with a diagnosis of polyps and sinusitis during 2011 were studied. The olfaction test was performed with three solutions; one with no odor (water) and two with phenylethyl alcohol (50% and 90% dilution, respectively). The patients’ olfaction state were graded as no olfaction, or low, moderate or good olfaction before and 1 and 3 months after surgery, and was given scores between 0 and 3 and evaluated quantitatively.  Results: Right-side olfaction was improved in 68.5% and left side in 67.1% of patients. Mean olfaction score on the right and left side was significantly improved after surgery in comparison with basic scores (before and after on the right side: 0.95±0.88 and 2.02±1.04; before and after on the left side: 1.02±0.84 and 2.00±1.21; both P

Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation on Recurrence of Nasal Polyposis after Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is a relatively common disease with serious impacts on patient quality of life. Recurrence of polyps after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a dilemma. Vitamin D3 (VD3) is known to inhibit the proliferation of nasal polyp-derived fibroblasts. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of oral VD3 on the...

[Comparison of dissolvable sinus dressings in functional endoscopic sinus surgery].

OBJECTIVES Nasal packing is commonly practiced in postoperative care after nose and sinus surgery, not only for haemostasis but also as internal stabilisation and synechia formation control. The aim of our study was to compare the pain level, adhessions and haemostatic properties of Stammberger sinus dressing (SSD) with Dissolvable Sinu-Knit (DSK) and routine nasal packing in latex gloves finge...

Comparison of Clonidine and Midazolam Premedication Before Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Results of Clinical Trial

OBJECTIVES Premedication with clonidine has been found to reduce the bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), therefore lowering the risk of surgical complications. Premedication is an essential part of pre-surgical care and can potentially affect magnitude of systemic stress response to a surgical procedure. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of premedication with clonidi...

Olfactory outcomes after endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery.

BACKGROUND Olfaction has been demonstrated to have a great impact on patients' lives. Transsphenoidal endoscopic pituitary surgery is associated with potentially significant damage to olfactory tissues, but to date this issue has been only poorly documented in the literature. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study comparing olfactory outcomes pre- and postpituitary surgery. METHOD Patients w...

Postoperative care after endoscopic sinus surgery.

• It is essential that you irrigate or douche your nasal cavities with saline (salt water) solution at least twice a day after surgery. This is to help remove blood clots and improve healing. • You may use the Sinus Rinse® bottle, a large suction bulb, or a syringe to irrigate your nasal cavities over the sink. Saline solution can be made by mixing the following: • 1⁄2 tsp of salt • 1⁄2 tsp of ...
