Comparison of different turbulence models in a high pressure fuel jet

Authors

Abstract:

In this study, modeling of a fuel jet which has been injected by high pressure into a low-pressure tank are investigated. Due to the initial conditions and the geometry of this case and similar cases (like CNG injectors in internal combustion engines (ICE)), the barrel shocks and Mach disk are observed. Hence a turbulence and transient flow will be expected with lots of shocks and waves. According to the increasing usage of this type of injectors in ICE, more studies should be conducted to find the most accurate and beneficial models for modeling this phenomenon. In order to find an accurate and beneficial turbulence model ,in this study, three Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models (SST k-ω, RNG and standard k ) and large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model were compared by the fuel jet characteristics in three regions (outlet of the nozzle, at Mach disk and at the downstream of the flow). Although the LES model needs more time for each test, the results are more reliable and accurate. On the other hand, RANS turbulence models have lots of errors (more than 10 percent) especially for predicting the characteristics of fuel jet at Mach disk.

Use of Stochastic Turbulence Models in Jet Acoustics

There are many approaches to determine the sound propagated from turbulent flows.  In hybrid methods, the turbulent noise source field is computed or modeled separately from the far-field calculations.  To have an initial and quick estimation of the sound propagation, less computationally intensive methods can be developed using stochastic models of the turbulent fluctuations.   In this paper, ...

Application and Comparison of Different Combustion Models of High Pressure LOX/CH4 Jet Flames

The present work focuses on the numerical modeling of combustion in liquid-propellant rocket engines. Pressure and temperature are well above thermodynamic critical points of both the propellants and then the reactants show liquid-like characteristics of density and gas-like characteristics for diffusivity. The aim of the work is an efficient numerical description of the phenomena and RANS simu...

Numerical Study of Single Phase/Two-Phase Models for Nanofluid Forced Convection and Pressure Drop in a Turbulence Pipe Flow

In this paper, the problem of turbulent forced convection flow of water- alumina nanofluid in a uniformly heated pipe has been thoroughly investigated. In numerical study, single and two-phase models have been used. In single-phase modeling of nanofluid, thermal and flow properties of nanofluid have been considered to be dependent on temperature and volume fraction. Effects of volume fraction a...

The structure of the high-pressure gas jet from a spark plug fuel injector for direct fuel injection

A spark plug fuel injector (SPFI), which is a combination of a fuel injector and a spark plug was developed with the aim to convert any gasoline port injection spark ignition engine to gaseous fuel direct injection (Mohamad in Development of a spark plug fuel injector for direct injection of methane in spark ignition engine. PhD thesis, Cranfield University, 2006). A direct fuel injector is com...

focus on communication in iranian high school language classes: a study of the role of teaching materials in changing the focus onto communication in language classes

assessment of deep word knowledge in elementary and advanced iranian efl learners: a comparison of selective and productive wat tasks

testing plays a vital role in any language teaching program. it allows teachers and stakeholders, including program administrators, parents, admissions officers and prospective employers to be assured that the learners are progressing according to an accepted standard (douglas, 2010). the problems currently facing language testers have both practical and theoretical implications but the first i...
