Comparing the Diagnostic Outcomes of Staining Various Breast Lesions with Either Anti-CK 5/6 or Anti-CK 5
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objective: Anti-CK5/6 monoclonal antibodies have an established role in breast disease diagnosis. Anti-CK5 monoclonal antibodies have recently become commercially available. There has been growing interest in the staining characteristics of anti-CK5 and its potential diagnostic role in place of anti-CK5/6. We aim to compare and contrast the staining characteristics of anti-CK5/6 vs anti-CK5. Material and Methods: 58 tissue blocks containing 122 different lesions were selected from tissue archives. Two specimens (groups) were taken from each lesion One (group) was stained with anti-CK5 and the other (group) with anti-CK5/6 monoclonal antibodies, using the Streptavidin-biotin immuno-peroxidase method. The two groups of slides were compared and contrasted for lesion staining pattern and for intensity, using light microscopy. Results: Results showed that the diagnostic staining pattern was exactly the same in both anti-CK5 and anti-CK5/6 groups, and also showed that anti-CK5, stained most of the lesions more intensely than anti-CK5/6. Conclusion: Anti-CK5 performed at least as well (for lesion-pattern staining), and better (for lesion staining intensity) than did anti-CK5/6 in the diagnosis of a wide range of breast tissues and lesions. It may be justified to safely replace anti-CK5/6 with anti-CK5 in future routine clinical use, with resultant diagnostic and economic benefits.

Diagnostic application of CK-MB mass determination.
Recent advances in analytic techniques have increased the diagnostic value of creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), enabling earlier and more sensitive results. The CK-MB mass immunoassays, that utilise the monoclonal anti-CK-MB in conjunction with anti-M or anti-B antibodies, are able to measure accurately small changes during the early hours after myocardial infarction (MI). CK-MB has two main limitati...

A 65-year-old man in whom an inferior vena cava filter had been implanted for deep vein thrombosis was admitted to the cardiology department due to appetite loss and lumbago. Laboratory data showed increased total creatinine kinase (CK, 796 U/L, Picture 1, left) and CK-MB (1,213 U/ L), which exceeded the total CK value. Electrophoresis showed, in addition to an increase in CK-BB, a peak that mi...
full textA novel platform for detection of CK+ and CK- CTCs.
UNLABELLED Metastasis is a complex, multistep process that begins with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Circulating tumor cells (CTC) are believed to have undergone EMT and thus lack or express low levels of epithelial markers commonly used for enrichment and/or detection of such cells. However, most current CTC detection methods target only EpCAM and/or cytokeratin (CK) to enrich e...

We studied the effect of prostate resection on serum creatine kinase (EC 2.7.3.2) and lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) isoenzymes in 22 patients. Two hours after their operations, two-thirds of these patients had increased total creatine kinase activity. The MB isoenzyme was demonstrated in sera of 66% of the patients and the BB isoenzyme in 76%. MB content varied from 1 to 7% of total creat...
