Abstract:

Introduction: Radiomorphometric indices obtained from panoramic radiography are used to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate osteoporosis. Given the importance of early diagnosing osteoporosis. The present study was conducted to compare osteoporotic and healthy women in Rafsanjan, Iran in terms of mandibular radiomorphometric indices obtained from their panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods:This descriptive cross-sectional study examined 212 subjects, including 53 osteoporotic women and a control group comprising 159 women presenting to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, School of Dentistry, Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences, Rafsanjan, Iran .The participants were investigated by performing radiographic imaging using a digital panoramic system (Planmeca Promax, Helsinki, Finland). The radiographic data recorded on each image included radiomorphometric indices such as mandibular cortical index(MCI),  antegonial index (AI) and gonial index(GI). The data collected from the checklists were analyzed in SPSS-22. Results: The osteoporotic patients were not significantly different from the controls in terms of AI. The mean GI was significantly higher in the osteoporotic women than in the women in the control group. Investigating MCI showed that category C1 was significantly higher in the controls than in the osteoporotic women, whereas category C2 was higher in the osteoporotic group than in the controls. Conclusion:The present findings revealed that GI and MCI obtained from panoramic radiographs can be used to diagnose osteoporosis and differentiate osteoporotic patients from healthy individuals. Although the indices were affected by age in both groups, differences in the indices between the patients and controls were insignificant in the same age group.

The comparison of mandibular radiomorphometric indices in panoramic radiography between patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy individuals.

AIM Osteoporosis and periodontitis are two separate diseases with different origins and manifestations. It is believed that these diseases linked together, because they both lead to bone damage, some risk factors are similar, they both have the highest prevalence in middle-aged and older women. Some studies showed that the use of panoramic radiography and special indices could be reliable tools...

Evaluation of Radiomorphometric Indices in Panoramic Radiograph – A Screening Tool

BACKGROUND Mandibular cortical indices, like the mandibular cortical index (MCI), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mental index (MI), antegonial index (AI) and gonial index (GI) have been developed to assess and quantify the quality of mandibular bone mass. Aim and Objectives : The aim of this pilot study was to measure the radiomorphometric indices in a digital panoramic radiograph and find t...

Panoramic radiomorphometric indices as reliable parameters in predicting osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND The purpose was to evaluate the significance of panoramic radiomorphometric indices (mandibular cortical index [MCI], mental index [MI] and panoramic mandibular index [PMI]) as useful tools for identifying osteoporosis. METHODS One hundred healthy women aged ≥ 30 years were included. Digital panoramic images and bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spines were recorded. Radiomo...

Panoramic Radiomorphometric Indices of the Mandible in an Iranian Population

Abstract Objectives: Radiomorphometric indices measured on simple radiographic images can be used for qualitative and quantitative assessment of bone. Panoramic radiographic imaging can therefore assist dentists in early detection of osteoporosis in patients. Considering the effect of ethnic and environmental factors on development of osteoporosis and absence of normal values of radiomorphom...

Panoramic-Based Mandibular Indices and Bone Mineral Density of Femoral Neck and Lumbar Vertebrae in Women

OBJECTIVE The aim of this cross-sectional analytic study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of panoramic-based indices of the mandible (Mental Index-MI, Mandibular Cortical Index-MCI and Panoramic Mandibular Index-PMI) and to determine their correlation with bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4) in order to assess the possibility of using these paramet...

Correlation of Mandibular Radiomorphometric Indices with Serum Calcium and Serum Estradiol in Pre- and Post-menopausal Women

BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a disease that is seen commonly with increasing age. The purpose of this study was to compare the bone quality of pre- and post-menopausal women using the quantitative indices determined by measurements on panoramic radiographs (mental index, inferior and superior panoramic mandibular indices, antegonion index [AGI], and gonion index) and to determine the effects of s...
