Ciliary Body Tuberculosis Presenting with Attacks of Acute Intraocular Pressure Rise
author
Abstract:
Purpose: To report a rare presentation of ophthalmic tuberculosis. Case Report: A 19-year-old man was referred to the glaucoma clinic due to multiple attacks of increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in his right eye. IOP of the right eye was 50 mmHg, and glaucomatous damage of the optic nerve was present. In gonioscopy, an oval-black lesion was present in the ciliary body band on the temporal side, which looked like a granuloma in ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). After rejecting immunological diseases due to the 20mm tuberculin test, the diagnosis of ciliary body tuberculosis was made. The patient was treated with a multi-drug regimen for 9 months. After 4 weeks, IOP was normalized, and at the end of 9 months, the ciliary body granuloma disappeared. Conclusion: Ciliary body tuberculosis can cause multiple attacks of acute IOP rise (possibly due to the release of pigment and necrotic debris). Systemic causes of glaucoma such as tuberculosis should be kept in mind, especially in unilateral cases, and performing a thorough gonioscopy is useful in this regard.

Retained intraocular iron foreign body presenting with acute retinal necrosis
We report an unusual case of retained metallic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) presenting with acute retinal necrosis (ARN). A healthy young man presented with signs of ARN including hypopyon, dense vitritis, and peripheral retinal necrosis following alleged history of trauma with a high-velocity projectile. After initial management of ARN with systemic antivirals, a retained metallic IOFB was ...
full textIntraocular pressure rise after argon laser trabeculoplasty.
Eighty-four eyes received 107 argon laser trabeculoplasty treatments at Beth Israel Medical Center between 1982 and 1984 for advanced primary and secondary glaucoma. The prelaser mean pressure was 20.25 mmHg. Pressures taken 1 1/2 hours postoperatively varied widely: the pressure rose after 47 treatments and fell or remained the same after 60. Significant increases in pressure occurred in 10 ey...
full textDepression of intraocular pressure following inactivation of connexin43 in the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body.
PURPOSE Conditional inactivation of connexin43 (Cx43) in the pigmented epithelium of the mouse eye results in a reduction in aqueous humor production and complete loss of the vitreous chamber. It was proposed that gap junctions between pigmented and nonpigmented epithelia of the ciliary body are critical for the production of the aqueous humor. To form such junctions, Cx43 in the pigmented epit...
full textEVect of acute intraocular pressure changes on short posterior ciliary artery haemodynamics
Background/aims—Vascular insuYciency due to abnormal autoregulation has been proposed as a major factor in the development of glaucoma. The anterior optic nerve is primarily perfused by the short posterior ciliary arteries. The autoregulatory capacity of these vessels in response to acutely elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was examined in normal human subjects. Methods—Colour Doppler imaging...

full textEffect of oral clonidine on acute intraocular pressure rise after cataract extraction under general anaesthesia.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of preoperative oral clonidine (5 g/kg) in preventing ocular hypertension in the early period after cataract surgery with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation under general anaesthesia. METHODS This was a randomized double-blind clinical trial comprising of 62 eyes in 62 patients with senile cataract without using any viscoelastics. They were rand...
