Abstract:

In the present study, PtRuCe/MWNTs nanocatalysts synthesized via polyol process technique are applied as anode electro-catalyst in methanol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR). To characterize the nanocatalysts, TEM, XRD, EDS and XPS are investigated. Cyclic voltammetry and choronoamperometry are used to evaluate the electro-catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts in methanol electro-oxidation, respectively. Further addition of the Ce promoter to MWNTs-supported PtRu nanocatalyst shows the highest activity and the lowest onset potential in MOR at Ce to Pt molar ratio of 0.7. A significant enhancement of the forward anodic peak in cyclic voltammetry experiments is observed for the Ce-promoted PtRu catalyst with cerium to platinum molar ratio of 0.7, i.e. 349 mA/cm2.mgPt , in comparison with 182 mA/cm2.mgPt and 251 mA/cm2.mgPt , respectively, corresponding to Pt/MWNTs and PtRu(1:1)/MWNTs nanocatalysts. Furthermore, the chronoamperommetry results present a remarkable improvement in the final current density of PtRuCe/MWNTs (6.1 mA/cm2), compared to the un-promoted catalysts, having a decreasing propensity, i.e. PtRu/MWNTs (3.7 mA/cm2) and Pt/MWNTs (2.05 mA/cm2.mgcat). The improved performance of PtRuCe/MWNTs may be attributed to the formation of highly-dispersed Pt nanoparticles on the support, followed by a significant enhancement of bifunctional mechanism, as a result of cerium incorporation.

Preparation and Characterization of Zirconia-Coated Nanodiamonds as a Pt Catalyst Support for Methanol Electro-Oxidation

Zirconia-coated nanodiamond (ZrO₂/ND) electrode material was successfully prepared by one-step isothermal hydrolyzing from ND-dispersed ZrOCl₂·8H₂O aqueous solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals that a highly conformal and uniform ZrO₂ shell was deposited on NDs by this simple method. The coating obtained at 90 °C without further calcination was mainly composed of mo...

Novel Anode Catalyst for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

PtRu catalyst is a promising anodic catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) but the slow reaction kinetics reduce the performance of DMFCs. Therefore, this study attempts to improve the performance of PtRu catalysts by adding nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe). Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are used to increase the active area of the catalyst and to improve the catalyst performance. Elec...

Oxidation of Methanol using Carburized Molybdenum Catalyst

Molybdenum catalysts carburized in CH4/H2 exhibited activity for methanol electrooxidation (MOR) in half cell measurements. Mo carburized at 773 and 873 K showed high electrooxidation of methanol compared to carburization at other temperatures. Catalyst characterization was carried out by XRD and TPC. The active carbide species responsible to facilitate the MOR was the Mo oxycarbide and –Mo2C s...

A chameleon catalyst for nonheme iron-promoted olefin oxidation.

We report the chameleonic reactivity of two nonheme iron catalysts for olefin oxidation with H2O2 that switch from nearly exclusive cis-dihydroxylation of electron-poor olefins to the exclusive epoxidation of electron-rich olefins upon addition of acetic acid. This switching suggests a common precursor to the nucleophilic oxidant proposed to Fe(III)-η(2)-OOH and electrophilic oxidant proposed t...

Platinium-Ruthenium electrocatalyst as sensor electrode for methanol oxidation

Hybrid nanocomposites of binary Pt-Ru/Polyaniline were prepared by oxidative polymerization of aniline andformation Pt and Ru nanoparticles. The polymerization of aniline was carried out in the presence of Potassiumhexa cyano Platinate (IV) and Ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate as oxidizing agents. During the reaction anilinemonomers undergo oxidation and form polyaniline (PANi) whereas the redu...
