Cardioprotective effect of aqueous extract of Chichorium intybus L. on ischemia-reperfusion injury in isolated rat heart
Authors
Abstract:
Objective: Several studies have shown that Chichorium intybus L. (C. intybus) which possesses flavonoid compounds has an effective role in treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Contractile dysfunction mostly occurs after acute myocardial infarction, cardiac bypass surgery, heart transplantation and coronary angioplasty. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of C. intybus on ischemia- reperfusion injury in isolated rat heart. Materials and Methods: The animals were divided into four groups (Sham, Control, 1 mg/ml and 3 mg/ml of extract) of 8 rats. The aorta was cannulated, and then the heart was mounted on a Langendorff apparatus. Next, a balloon was inserted into the left ventricle (LV) and peak positive value of time derivate of LV pressure (+dp/dt), coronary flow (CF), and left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP) in pre-ischemia and reperfusion period were calculated by a Power Lab system. All groups underwent a 30-minute global ischemia followed by a 60-minute reperfusion. Results: The results showed that heart rate (HR), coronary flow, and left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and rate of pressure product (RPP) significantly decreased in the control group during reperfusion, while these values in the groups receiving the extract (3mg/ml) improved significantly during reperfusion (p

full textCardioprotective Effect of Garlic Juice on the Isolated Rat Heart in Ischemia- Reperfusion
Background: It has been reported that the chronic oral administration of garlic homogenate protected the rat heart from in vitro ischemic reperfusion injury. However, the biological effects of garlic juice on the heart are expected to be different from oral administration of it. Objective: the present study was designed to investigate the effect of garlic juice on the isolated rat heart in is...
full textCardioprotective effects of methanolic extract of Scrophularia frigida on ischemia-reperfusion-induced injuries in isolated rat heart
Myocardial infarction is a common presentation of coronary artery disease and the leading cause of death worldwide. The present study was investigated potential resistance to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injuries following administration of methanolic (MeOH) extract of Scrophularia frigida (S. frigida) in isolated rat heart. Male Wistar rat hearts (n= 8-10) were isolated and allowed to equilibrat...

full textCardioprotective effects of bilberry extract on ischemia-reperfusion-induced injury in isolated rat heart
Methods Anthocyanins from the prepared bilberry extract were analyzed using the HPLC-DAD system and were expressed as a standard of cyanidine-3-glucoside (mg/L). Experiments were carried out on the isolated hearts from Wistar rats of both sexes according to the Langendorff method. Postischemic myocardial injuries during reperfusion were determined by changes in coronary flow rate, lactate dehyd...
