Abstract:

Abstract:   The theory of optimization has improved remarkably during the last four decades. The main part of optimizing investigations has been focused on enhancing buckling resistance which does not violate the economic feasibility of final design. The finite element analysis which is called ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimization) is presented for optimum (or most ideal) design of columns to increase the buckling resistance of structures. To attain the significant design variables, this method can be employed to choose an appropriate, affective and economical way. During an iterative process, the above approach ensures the attainment of global maximum critical load under the imposed equality volume constraint, type of boundary conditions and type of cross sections. Precise results and numerical examples have been shown and useful diagrams have been developed for the cases of simple, clamped and clamped free supported by different types of cross-sectional areas. The model has succeeded in arriving at the global optimal column designs possessing the absolute maximum buckling load without violating the economic feasibility requirement. As a matter of fact, the cross sectional area of column changes whereas, the total volume of column remains constant. As a result, the buckling forces increase. According to this study critical buckling load of columns decreases by changing the boundary condition from clamped to clamped free and then simply supported.

Nonlinear Buckling of Circular Nano Plates on Elastic Foundation

The following article investigates nonlinear symmetric buckling of moderately thick circular Nano plates with an orthotropic property under uniform radial compressive in-plane mechanical load. Taking into account Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory, principle of virtual work, first order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT) and nonlinear Von-Karman strains, the governing equations are obtained ...

Elastic buckling finite strip analysis of the AISC sections database and proposed local plate buckling coefficients

The objective of this paper is to provide analytical expressions for the elastic cross-section local buckling stress, including element interaction, of hot-rolled steel structural shapes. The crosssection local buckling stress is determined by finite strip analysis. Local stability of each crosssection is considered in axial compression, as well as positive and negative bending about the major ...

Buckling of liquid columns.

Under appropriate conditions, a column of viscous liquid falling onto a rigid surface undergoes a buckling instability. Here we show experimentally and theoretically that liquid buckling exhibits a hitherto unsuspected complexity involving three different modes-viscous, gravitational, and inertial-depending on how the viscous forces that resist bending of the column are balanced. We also find t...

Condition based maintenance optimization considering multiple objectives

In condition based maintenance (CBM) optimization, the main optimization objectives include maximizing reliability and minimizing maintenance costs, which are often times conflicting to each other. In this work, we develop a physical programming based approach to deal with the multi-objective condition based maintenance optimization problem. Physical programming presents two major advantages: (...

Elastic Buckling of Moderately Thick Homogeneous Circular Plates of Variable Thickness

In this study, the buckling response of homogeneous circular plates with variable thickness subjected to radial compression based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory in conjunction with von-Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations is investigated. Furthermore, optimal thickness distribution over the plate with respect to buckling is presented. In order to determine the distr...
