Bone Mineral Density, Lean Body Mass and Bone Biomarkers Following Physical Exercise in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Undergoing Chemotherapy

Authors

Abstract:

Background: This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of physical exercise on bone mineral density (BMD), lean body mass (LBM) and bone biomarkers in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on chemotherapy. Methods: forty-six leukemic children were randomly assigned to two groups; exercise group (E) undergoing supervised mixed exercise program consisting of aerobic, resistance and flexibility training and control group (C) who did not receive any kind of exercise. BMD and LBM were measured by Densitometry (DEXA) and bone biomarkers were assessed through blood sample analysis at baseline, and then 6 and 12 months later. Results: There was marked increase in BMD, LBM and bone biomarkers in response to exercise with the time compared with control group (P<0.001). At the end of the study, the results of the study showed that the percentage of patients with normal lumbar BMD (LBMD) and total BMD (TBMD) in exercise group were 13% and 17.4%, respectively compared to 0% in control group. In addition, the percentage of osteoporotic patients at LBMD & TBMD in exercise group were 21.7% and 17.4%, respectively compared to 78.3% and 52.18% in control group, respectively (P<0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that physical exercise could be effective in increasing BMD, LBM and bone biomarkers in children with ALL.

Does adjuvant chemotherapy change bone mineral density and related serum biomarkers in women with breast cancer?

Background: The primary objective of this study was to assess BMD change in Iranian females with breast cancer. Methods: A sample of 73 female breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy either alone or followed by radiotherapy between March 2013 and February 2016 were considered for this study. Bone mineral density (BMD) change was evaluated by measuring z-score of lumbar spin...

Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer and accounts for 30-40% of all malignancies. A retrospective review  was performed of the hospital records of 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls, aged  from 2.5 to 15 years with ALL initially referred to Nemazee hospital Nuclear medicine center for whole body bone scanning between 2000 and 2002. Bone marrow pathology established ALL (L1) in two and ALL (...

Bone Mineral Density in Survivors of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) after completion of treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 103 survivors of ALL aged 13.5 ± 0.45 who completed their treatment at least one year earlier were enrolled. Among these, 49.5% and 51.5% received chemotherapy alone and chemotherapy plus crania...
